of man to be delivered up, and they will kill him, he added, Mark indeed, that 58.561 They did not understand the saying, and were afraid to ask him; and Luke, that It was hidden from them, that they might not perceive it, and they were afraid to ask him about the saying. And when they came to the multitude, a man came to him, kneeling before him, and saying: Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is a lunatic, and suffers terribly. For often he falls into the fire, and often into the water; and I brought him to your disciples, and they could not cure him. Scripture shows this man to be very weak in faith; and this is clear from many things: both from Christ saying, All things are possible to him who believes; and from the man who came to him saying, Help my unbelief; and from Christ commanding the demon, to no longer enter into him; and from the man saying again to Christ, If you are able And if his unbelief was the reason, he says, for the demon not coming out, why does he accuse the disciples? Showing that it was possible for them, even without those who bring others having faith, to heal in many places. For just as the faith of the one bringing was often sufficient to receive even from lesser ones, so often the power of those performing the miracle was sufficient, even when those who approached did not believe, to work wonders. And both of these are shown in the Scriptures. For those with Cornelius drew down the grace of the Spirit by their own faith; and in the time of Elisha, though no one believed, a dead man was raised. For those who threw him, did not throw him out of faith, but simply and as it happened out of cowardice, fearing the band of pirates, and they fled; and the one thrown was dead, and from the power of the holy body alone the dead man arose. From which it is clear here, that the disciples were also weak, but not all; for the pillars were not present there. γʹ. But see his senselessness from another point of view, how in front of the crowd he pleads with Jesus against the disciples, saying, I brought him to your disciples, and they could not cure him. But he, absolving them of the accusations before the people, attributes the greater part to that one. For, O, he says, faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? not directing this to this man's person alone, lest he drive the man to despair, but also to all the Jews. For it was likely that many of those present were scandalized, and thought improper things about them. But when he says, How long shall I be with you? he shows again that death was welcome to him, and the matter one of desire, and the departure longed for; and that it was not being crucified, but being with them that was burdensome. However, he did not stop with the accusations; but what does he say? Bring him here to me. And he himself asks him, how long he has had it, both defending the disciples, and leading that man to a good hope, and to believe, that he would have deliverance from the evil. And he allows him to be convulsed, not for show (since at any rate a crowd was gathering, and he rebuked it), but for the father's sake; so that when he saw the demon being agitated from merely being called, he might thus be led to faith in the coming miracle. But when that man said that it was From a child, and, If you can, help me, he says: All things are possible to him who believes, again turning the 58.562 accusation back on him. And when the leper said, If you will, you can make me clean, testifying to his authority, praising him and confirming what was said, he said, I will; be cleansed. But when this man uttered nothing worthy of his power, saying, If you can, help me, see how he corrects it, as not having been said properly. For what does he say? If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes. What he says is this: Such is the abundance of power with me, that others can also be made to work these wonders. So that if you believe as you ought, you yourself are able to heal, he says, both this one and many others. And having said these things, he delivered the demoniac. Οἵ τε γὰρ ῥίψαντες, οὐ διὰ πίστιν, ἀλλὰ διὰ δειλίαν ἔῤῥιψαν ἁπλῶς καὶ ὡς ἔτυχε, φοβηθέντες τὸ πειρατήριον, καὶ ἔφυγον· αὐτός τε ὁ ῥιφεὶς ἀποτεθνηκὼς ἦν, καὶ ἀπὸ μόνης τῆς τοῦ ἁγίου σώματος δυνάμεως ἀνίστατο ὁ νεκρός. Ὅθεν δῆλον ἐνταῦθα, ὅτι καὶ οἱ μαθηταὶ ἠσθένησαν, ἀλλ' οὐ πάντες· οἱ στῦλοι γὰρ οὐ παρῆσαν ἐκεῖ. γʹ. Θέα δὲ τούτου καὶ ἑτέρωθεν τὴν ἀγνωμοσύνην, πῶς ἐπὶ τοῦ ὄχλου ἐντυγχάνει τῷ Ἰησοῦ κατὰ τῶν μαθητῶν λέγων, ὅτι Προσήνεγκα αὐτὸν τοῖς μαθηταῖς σου, καὶ οὐκ ἴσχυσαν αὐτὸν θεραπεῦσαι. Ἀλλ' αὐτὸς ἀπαλλάττων αὐτοὺς τῶν ἐγκλημάτων ἐπὶ τοῦ δήμου, ἐκείνῳ τὸ πλέον λογίζεται. Ὦ γενεὰ γὰρ, φησὶν, ἄπιστος καὶ διεστραμμένη, ἕως πότε ἔσομαι μεθ' ὑμῶν; οὐκ εἰς τὸ τούτου πρόσωπον μόνον ἀποτεινόμενος, ἵνα μὴ ἀπορήσῃ τὸν ἄνθρωπον, ἀλλὰ καὶ εἰς πάντας Ἰουδαίους. Καὶ γὰρ εἰκὸς πολλοὺς τῶν παρόντων σκανδαλισθῆναι, καὶ τὰ μὴ προσήκοντα ἐννοῆσαι περὶ αὐτῶν. Ὅταν δὲ εἴπῃ, Ἕως πότε ἔσομαι μεθ' ὑμῶν; δείκνυσι πάλιν ἀσπαστὸν ὄντα τὸν θάνατον αὐτῷ, καὶ ἐπιθυμίας τὸ πρᾶγμα, καὶ ποθεινὴν τὴν ἀποδημίαν· καὶ ὅτι οὐ τὸ σταυρωθῆναι, ἀλλὰ τὸ εἶναι μετ' αὐτῶν βαρύ. Οὐ μὴν ἔστη μέχρι τῶν ἐγκλημάτων· ἀλλὰ τί φησι; Φέρετέ μοι αὐτὸν ὧδε. Καὶ αὐτὸς δὲ ἐρωτᾷ αὐτὸν, πόσον χρόνον ἔχει, καὶ ὑπὲρ τῶν μαθητῶν ἀπολογούμενος, κἀκεῖνον ἄγων εἰς ἐλπίδα χρηστὴν, καὶ τοῦ πιστεῦσαι, ὅτι ἔσται αὐτῷ ἀπαλλαγὴ τοῦ κακοῦ. Καὶ ἀφίησιν αὐτὸν σπαράττεσθαι, οὐ πρὸς ἐπίδειξιν (ἐπειδὴ γοῦν ὄχλος συνήγετο, καὶ ἐπετίμησεν αὐτῷ), ἀλλὰ δι' αὐτὸν τὸν πατέρα· ἵν' ὅταν ἴδῃ θορυβούμενον τὸ δαιμόνιον ἀπὸ τοῦ κληθῆναι μόνον, κἂν οὕτως ἐναχθῇ εἰς τὴν πίστιν τοῦ ἐσομένου θαύματος. Ἐπειδὴ δὲ ἐκεῖνος εἶπεν, ὅτι Ἐκ παιδὸς, καὶ ὅτι, Εἰ δύνασαι, βοήθει μοι, λέγει· Τῷ πιστεύοντι πάντα δυνατὰ, πάλιν εἰς αὐτὸν περιτρέπων 58.562 τὸ ἔγκλημα. Καὶ ὅτε μὲν ἔλεγεν ὁ λεπρός· Εἰ θέλεις, δύνασαί με καθαρίσαι, μαρτυρῶν αὐτοῦ τῇ ἐξουσίᾳ, ἐπαινῶν αὐτὸν καὶ βεβαιῶν τὸ εἰρημένον, ἔλεγε· Θέλω, καθαρίσθητι. Ὅτε δὲ οὗτος οὐδὲν ἄξιον τῆς αὐτοῦ δυνάμεως ἐφθέγξατο εἰπών· Εἰ δύνασαι, βοήθει μοι, ὅρα πῶς αὐτὸ διορθοῦται, ὡς οὐ δεόντως εἰρημένον. Τί γάρ φησιν; Εἰ δύνασαι πιστεῦσαι, πάντα δυνατὰ τῷ πιστεύοντι. Ὃ δὲ λέγει, τοιοῦτόν ἐστι· Τοσαύτη παρ' ἐμοὶ δυνάμεως περιουσία, ὡς καὶ ἑτέρους δύνασθαι ποιεῖν ταῦτα θαυματουργεῖν. Ὥστε ἂν πιστεύῃς ὡς δεῖ, καὶ αὐτὸς δύνασαι θεραπεῦσαι, φησὶ, καὶ τοῦτον καὶ ἑτέρους πολλούς. Καὶ ταῦτα εἰπὼν, ἀπήλλαξε τὸν δαιμονῶντα. Σὺ δὲ μὴ μόνον ἐντεῦθεν αὐτοῦ σκόπει τὴν πρόνοιαν καὶ
