and investigating them; for from constant reading there is some benefit for us. Thus we will be able to cleanse our own life, thus to cut out the thorns. For such is sin and worldly care, fruitless and painful. And just as the thorn, wherever it is held, pricks the one holding it; so also worldly things, wherever you grasp them, grieve the one who embraces and cherishes them. But spiritual things are not like this, but are like a pearl; whichever way you turn it, it delights the eyes. I mean something like this; 59.482 Someone has given alms; not only is he nourished by the hope of the future, but he also rejoices in the good things here, being confident everywhere and doing all things with great boldness. He has overcome evil desire; and before the kingdom he has already received the fruit from here, being praised, being admired before all others by his own conscience. And each of the good works is like this, just as, then, the conscience punishes evil things here even before Gehenna. And if, having sinned, you think on the things to come, you become fearful and trembling even when no one is punishing you; and if on present things, you have many enemies and live with suspicion, and you will not even be able to look in the face of those you have wronged anymore; or rather, even of those you have not wronged. For we do not reap so much pleasure from them as we do despondency, with the conscience crying out against us, with people outside condemning us, with God being provoked, with Gehenna travailing to receive us, with our thoughts not being at rest. For sin is heavy, heavy and burdensome, and more grievous than any lead. The one, then, who perceives it, will not be able to look up even a little, even if he is very insensitive. So it was then with Ahab, although he was very impious, when he perceived this, he walked with his head bowed, crushed and miserable. For this reason he also put on sackcloth, and sent forth fountains of tears. If we do this, and mourn as he did, we will cast off our accusations as Zacchaeus did, and we too will obtain some pardon. For just as with swellings and fistulas, if one does not first stop the flowing humour that irritates the wound, whatever medicines one applies, as long as the source of the evil has not been checked, one does everything in vain; so also we, if we do not stay our hand from covetousness and stop this wicked flow, even if we give alms, we do everything in vain. For that which was healed by it, covetousness came upon, inundated and ruined, and made it worse than before. Let us therefore cease from plundering, and so let us show mercy. But if we carry ourselves to cliffs, how shall we be able to breathe? For if someone were to pull from above one who is about to fall (which is what almsgiving is), and another were to pull him violently from below, nothing more will come from such a struggle than for the man to be torn apart. Therefore, so that we may not suffer this, nor that almsgiving, with covetousness weighing us down from below, should leave us and go away, let us lighten ourselves and spread our wings, so that having been perfected through the release from evils and through the working of eternal goods, we may obtain the eternal goods, by the grace and loving-kindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, with whom to the Father, together with the Holy Spirit, be glory, power, honor, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
