him a reward, doing nothing more for that one, but bringing profit to the one who offers the reward. And what is this? O God, I will sing a new song to you. If this is small in comparison to the greatness of the good deed, yet it is what he had. Since we too, from the poor and those who possess nothing, seek nothing else but praise and gratitude. But we do so, that we might become more glorious; but God, not because he needs it, but that he might make the singers themselves more glorious, and in this way again do them good. On a ten-stringed psaltery I will sing praises to you; that is, I will give thanks to you. But then there were instruments, through which they offered up songs; but now it is possible to use the body instead of instruments. For it is possible to sing also through the eyes, not only through the tongue, and through the hands, and through the feet, and through hearing. For when each of these 55.463 does those things, which bring glory and praise to God, such as when the eye does not look licentiously, when the hands are not for robbery, but are stretched out for almsgiving, when the ears are prepared for the reception of psalms and spiritual hearings, when the feet run to the church, when the heart does not contrive deceits, but gushes with love, the members of the body become a psaltery and a lyre, and it sings a new song, not one through words, but one through deeds. To the one who gives salvation to kings. For not armies and multitudes of soldiers, nor bodyguards, but the inclination of God is accustomed to save. To the one who redeems David his servant. Having spoken of the general, he also speaks of his own case, and he did not say, To the one who redeemed, but, To the one who redeems, showing his continuous providence. 5. Then again he asks for what he asked before, continuously falling down and entreating, so that he might be delivered from evil men, saying thus: Deliver me from the evil sword, and rescue me from the hand of strange sons, whose mouth has spoken vanity, and their right hand is a right hand of injustice. Whose sons are as new plants established in their youth. Here he describes worldly prosperity and wealth, and he sets down what is first, to have children who are vigorous and flourishing, and of both sexes. For he added: Their daughters are adorned, decorated as the likeness of a temple. Along with youth, he shows much luxury, and he describes their veils and womanly adornment, which come from much prosperity. Then what seems to be second, but perhaps is now first, again he describes wealth, saying: Their storehouses are full, belching forth from this one to that one. What is, Belching forth? Being straitened. The wealth is too great for the storehouses, he says. Their sheep bring forth abundantly, multiplying in their goings forth. Their oxen are fat. And this too seemed to be no small prosperity. For among the ancients, wealth was in these things, in herds of cattle and flocks and seeds, before the present folly was invented. There is no falling down of a fence, nor a way through. That is, the farmlands also enjoy much protection, much care, much diligence, with the fruits flourishing, the fences standing, the vine being planted on all sides and walled around. Nor a cry in their streets. Another, In their farmsteads. Another kind of prosperity, which is not allotted to all wealth; that is, peace and freedom and security; no one plotting, no one making war, but not even noise, nor confusion. They called the people blessed to whom these things belong. Blessed is the people whose God is the Lord. Do you see the virtue of the man? For having set forth all the wealth, and gone over it in his discourse, then having added the verdict of the many concerning it, he himself suffers nothing human from these things, nor does he consider 55.464 those who possess these things to be enviable, but having passed over all these things
