do you despise those who are highly esteemed by God, when you ought to lay down even your own soul for one of these little ones? But he is weak and of no account? 58.580 For this very reason, therefore, you must do everything to save him. For he himself also, leaving the ninety-nine sheep, went after that one, and the salvation of so many could not overshadow the loss of the one. And Luke says that he also carried it on his shoulders; And there will be more joy over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons. And from his leaving what was saved for its sake, and from rejoicing more over this one, he showed his great concern for it. Let us not then neglect such souls. For all these things were said for this reason. For by threatening that he who did not become a child would not enter heaven at all, and by mentioning the millstone, he brought down the pride of the arrogant; for nothing is so hostile to love as presumption; and by saying, It is necessary that scandals come, he made us vigilant; and by adding, Woe to the one through whom the scandal comes, he prepared each one to strive that it not happen through him. And by commanding to cut off those who cause scandal, he made salvation easy; and by enjoining not to despise them, and not enjoining it simply, but vehemently (For see, he says, that you do not despise one of these little ones); and by saying that Their angels see the face of my Father; and, For this I came; and, This is my Father's will; he made those who ought to care for them more earnest. Do you see how great a wall he has built around them, and how much concern he has for the easily despised and the perishing, threatening irreparable evils to those who trip them up, and promising great goods to those who heal and care for them, and again bringing the example from himself and from the Father? Let us also imitate him, shrinking from nothing that seems lowly and toilsome for the sake of the brethren; but even if service is required, even if he is small, even if he for whom this is done is of no account, even if the matter is laborious, even if one must cross mountains and cliffs, let all things be bearable for the salvation of the brother. For so highly esteemed is a soul to God, that he did not even spare his own Son. Therefore I beseech you, when dawn appears. immediately upon leaving the house, let us have this one purpose, and this care before all things, to snatch the one in danger; I do not mean only this perceptible danger; for this is not even a danger; but that of the soul, which is brought upon men by the devil. For the merchant, in order to increase his substance, crosses the sea; and the artisan, in order to add to his possessions, does everything. Let us therefore not be content with our own salvation alone, since we damage even this. For in war and battle, the soldier who looks only to this, how he might save himself by fleeing, also destroys the others with himself; just as, then, the noble one who takes up arms for the others, saves himself along with the others. Since, therefore, our affairs are also a war, and the bitterest of all wars, and a battle line and a fight, as our 58.581 king has commanded, let us be so arranged in the battle line, prepared for slaughters and blood and killings, looking to the salvation of all, and anointing those who are standing, and raising up those who are fallen. For many of our brethren lie in this battle line, having wounds, drenched with blood, and there is no one to heal them, not one of the people, not a priest, not anyone else, not a helper, not a friend, not a brother; but we each look to our own affairs. For this reason we also cut short our own. For the greatest confidence and good repute is not to look to one's own affairs. For this very reason we are weak and easily conquered by both men and the devil, because we seek the opposite of this, and do not shield one another, nor are we fenced in by love according to God, but we seek other friendships for ourselves
