binding their two feet with a wooden stock. These are the dramatic works of the newly-sprung-up adulterous heresy, o fathers. They have therefore decreed that the divine laws do not hold sway nor rule over emperors, whenever they do not wish it, but that their lawlessness and dissolution of the Lord's commandments should be called 'economy'. Whence they say it is not right for anyone in the present generation to imitate those who, even unto blood, spoke frankly against emperors on behalf of the divine laws; and for this reason they said that the Forerunner was not the forerunner because of his rebuke of Herod, thus diminishing the crown of the saint's virtue, and I might even say, pushing it aside as unnecessary, and they have dared to say openly, and still say, that Chrysostom, the light of the world, did not do well to be exiled on behalf of the widow's field, having rebuked Eudoxia and thereby disturbed the church. They have declared that each of the hierarchs may act according to what seems best to him in incidental errors, and not as the canon in every case prescribes, even if deposition is at stake, and they consider this 'economy'; for he says it is not even possible to observe all the canons. Why say the rest and prolong the account? They have fabricated a multifarious heresy, which overturns the holy gospel, dissolves the divine canons, slaps away the teachings of the God-bearing fathers and prepares the way for the antichristic apostasy, for which reason they do not follow the gospel of Christ in all things, nor do they abide by the apostolic decrees or the patristic commandments, but in one way so, and in another way not so, on account of the wicked and invalidating practice they have invented, which is not 'economy'; for no 'economy' effects their dissolution, nor indeed that of canons, except in cases where it is possible to overlook some small thing, but certainly not to the point of setting aside a law or a necessary or deposing canon; for this is a sign of apostasy. Having heard these things, therefore, holy fathers, suffer with us, the humble, who are laboring on behalf of the common inheritance of the faith, and as much as is possible, lend a hand. We know your life in the fire of the nation's temptations and we call blessed your confessor's endurance, and we do not hesitate to call you martyrs of Christ; but nevertheless, be eager, most holy ones, to become extinguishers of the fire of evil doctrine which has been kindled among us. Yes, we beseech your fatherly compassion, you who are emulous shoots of that divine and Sabaite root, which among other things is truly fervent and fiery for the vindication of the faith. It was known even in earlier generations how the blessed Sabaites struggled for the truth. Being therefore yourselves of the same grace and the same spirit, o most venerable ones, do not refuse to show the same things as they did, as far as possible, in the present innovation of the faith, so that you might gladden God, on whose behalf this account is made, and the all-blessed Sabas with all the saints. And it will be sufficient for what is sought, if nothing else, for you to anathematize the adulterous synod which anathematized the saints, and secondly, to grant us your sacred prayers both for endurance of those who do us harm and for the concord and peace of the churches of Christ. 556 {1To Gregory my child}1 The entire account, beloved brother, as a soldier of Christ, as one shut up with me, a sinner, for the sake of his gospel, you should neither be disposed insensibly (for that is most irrational) nor on the other hand be grieved beyond what is necessary (for that is most [us]eless). I received two letters, one from our father and another [from] our brother Athanasius, our father rebuking my humility, indeed, but also breaking my wretched soul to compassion, while brother Athanasius breathed so much against my weakness, that if the Lord had not helped me, my soul would have soon dwelt in Hades; for you know from whom a man hopes to be helped; and
