He has comforted us. And again: He who gives longsuffering to the fainthearted. And this same prophet elsewhere, A broken and humbled heart God will not despise. Therefore, whenever you wish to enjoy comfort, humble yourself, break your mind. This, then, is about His will, about His goodness and love for mankind, that this is His work, to comfort those in misfortunes; and what follows is about His power. He who numbers the multitude of the stars; that is, He who knows. For since the discourse was about a multitude that was scattered and for the time being nowhere to be seen, he reasonably brought this example forward, showing by this that he will be able to gather together even those who are scattered. For it is His custom both to set right and comfort the brokenhearted, and He knows the infinite multitudes of the stars with precision. Therefore, He will also gather us with precision, to whom He promised that we would be according to their number. And calling them all by names. Another, Calling all by names. I think this was said about the Israelites, and that the prophet is saying the same thing that Isaiah also says after this: Fear not, Israel; from the ends of the earth I have called you, and I said to you: You are my child. What does it mean, He will call them all by name? None of them, he says, will be lost, but just as those who call by name, so also He will gather all with precision. Great is our Lord, and great is His strength. Since he said a very great thing, that he would gather together so many myriads scattered throughout the whole world, he then discusses His power, leading the greatly disturbed Jews to faith. And of His understanding there is no number. Therefore do not ask how and in what way; for His greatness is infinite. 55.477 For this reason he said, Of His greatness there is no end. But just as His greatness is infinite, so also is His understanding. For this reason, after saying, Great is our Lord, he added: And of His understanding there is no number. And His knowledge is wonderful; wherefore he also said: Your knowledge has been made wonderful to me; it has grown strong, I am not able to attain to it. And His judgments are again unsearchable; wherefore he also said: Your judgments are a great abyss. 2. Therefore when He is both great and powerful, and wise, do not be overly curious how these things will be. The Lord lifts up the meek, but humbles sinners down to the ground. For lest some of the foolish say, What is it to us, that He knows the stars with precision? he also speaks of the care for men which happens in this way; and he did not say, The Lord helps the meek, but what is much greater, Lifting up; as speaking of a loving father. And what is, Lifting up? Taking possession of, carrying, bearing through. Have you seen again His power perfected in both respects, both in raising the humble, and humbling the reckless? And he does not simply humble, but also with great excess; for this is what, Down to the ground, means. Begin to the Lord with thanksgiving. Another, Recount. Having spoken of His great deeds, he again calls them to the hymn, saying: Begin to the Lord with thanksgiving; that is, in thanksgiving, with much eagerness. Sing psalms to our God on the lyre. Lest any of the senseless say, and what are the heavenly things to me? he immediately introduced human need, showing by the induction, for what reason He covers the heaven with clouds. For your sake, he says, that He may prepare rain for you. And rain for your sake, that it may bring forth grass. And see the wisdom; he speaks of the universal goods which He has given to all, silencing them from abundance. For if He has used such lavishness upon the unbelievers, so as both to gather clouds, and to make rain, and to stir up the earth, how much more for you, who are a people to him

Τί δέ ἐστιν, Ἀναλαμβάνων; Ἀνακτώμενος, φέρων, διαβαστάζων. Εἶδες πάλιν ἐφ' ἑκάτερα τὴν δύναμιν αὐτοῦ ἀπηρτισμένην, ἐπί τε τὸ αἴρειν τοὺς ταπεινοὺς, καὶ ταπεινοῦν τοὺς ἀπονενοημένους; Οὐχ ἁπλῶς δὲ ταπεινοῖ, ἀλλὰ καὶ μετὰ πολλῆς τῆς ὑπερβολῆς· τοῦτο γάρ ἐστι τὸ, Ἕως γῆς. Ἐξάρξατε τῷ Κυρίῳ ἐν ἐξομολογήσει. Ἄλλος, Καταλέξατε. Εἰπὼν αὐτοῦ τὰ κατορθώματα, πάλιν ἐπὶ τὸν ὕμνον αὐτοὺς καλεῖ, λέγων· Ἐξάρξατε τῷ Κυρίῳ ἐν ἐξομολογήσει· τουτέστιν, ἐν εὐχαριστίᾳ, μετὰ πολλῆς τῆς σπουδῆς. Ψάλατε τῷ Θεῷ ἡμῶν ἐν κιθάρᾳ. Ἄλλος, ∆ιὰ λύρας. Τῷ περιβάλλοντι τὸν οὐρανὸν ἐν νεφέλαις, τῷ ἑτοιμάζοντι τῇ γῇ ὑετόν. Ἵνα μή τις τῶν ἀναισθήτων λέγῃ, καὶ τί πρὸς ἐμὲ τὰ οὐράνια; ἐπήγαγεν εὐθέως τὴν χρείαν τὴν ἀνθρωπίνην, δεικνὺς διὰ τῆς ἐπαγωγῆς, καὶ τίνος ἕνεκεν περιβάλλει τὸν οὐρανὸν ἐν νεφέλαις. ∆ιὰ σὲ, φησὶν, ἵνα σοι παρασκευάζῃ ὑετόν. Καὶ ὑετὸς διὰ σὲ, ἵνα ἐκβάλλῃ χόρτον. Καὶ ὅρα σοφίαν· Λέγει τὰ καθολικὰ ἀγαθὰ ἃ πᾶσιν ἔδωκεν, ἐπιστομίζων αὐτοὺς ἐκ περιουσίας.
