you have become a peculiar people. To him who makes grass grow on the mountains. See the abundance of his providence, when not only on arable land, but also on the mountains he provides his bounteous table, the nourishment of the beasts which have been created for the service of men. Therefore he also adds: Giving to the beasts their food, and to the young ravens that call upon him. He speaks of another generosity again, when he provides food not only to the beasts that serve men, but also to other irrational creatures; For also to the young ravens, he says, that call upon 55.478 him. And if among irrational creatures, and wild irrational creatures that offer no service to men, there is such great providence; how much more among men, and men who praise him, whom he also called a peculiar people and his own portion. Then, since they were weak and destitute of weapons, and stripped of everything, so that they might not be troubled on this account, see how he also corrects this weakness of theirs, saying: He will not take pleasure in the strength of the horse, nor is he well pleased with the legs of a man. The Lord is well pleased with those who fear him, and with those who hope in his mercy. Another version, With those who wait for his mercy. If you have these things, he says, fear and hope in him with exactness, you will draw down his favor; and having drawn it down, you will be more powerful than all those who have horses and weapons. One thing therefore is required, not to be vexed, nor to be troubled, but to wait for his mercy; for this especially is hope, not to despair nor to give up when not receiving immediately. And he well said, His mercy. For they did not have confidence from their works. But nevertheless, he says, even if you have been betrayed by your works, yet hope in his mercy, you will obtain his providence and his help; may it be granted to all of us to attain these things, by the grace and loving-kindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory and the power, for ever and ever. ON PSALM 147. Praise the Lord, O Jerusalem, praise your God, O Zion.
1. Not to the city, but to the inhabitants he directs his discourse, which he does throughout the whole book, doing this here also. He continually exhorts and advises, so as to offer thanks to God for his benefits, and to trust neither in buildings, nor in the security of walls, but in his providence. Having prepared for this, he adds, and says: For he has strengthened the bars of your gates, he has blessed your children within you. What is, He has strengthened the bars? He has established you in safety, he says, he has made you invincible. He has blessed your children, that is, he has caused them to increase in number. This is one kind of benefit; but another is also in the words, Within you. What he says, therefore, is this: Not scattered, nor dispersed, but gathered together, and being within you, he has made them to increase. Then showing also another kind of providence, he says: He who makes your borders peace. For it is possible to be in safety, and to be many, and to be at war; but here he shows them delivered even from this plot, by so speaking, and by showing not only the city delivered from those who plot against it, but also its very extremities. Do you see how many benefits he enumerates? And the first and greatest of all 55.479, in saying, Your God. For by this word he says all these things, that he has made you his own, that he has made you his heir, that being the common Master of all, he is especially yours; which is the first chief point of good things. Second, that he has established the city in safety. Third, that he has made them to be many. Fourth, that
