he emptied himself; so that it is clear how it is said by the Septuagint, "I am poor and in labors from my youth." But in his youth, and moreover being raised by his supposed father Joseph and his mother according to the flesh, he was poor among the poor; and for the rest of his life, though he was rich, he became poor for our sakes, so that we by his poverty might become rich. But when, then, he was working wonders and accomplishing the powers of God, he was exalted and, being exalted through the passion, was humbled. Wherefore he said, "As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of man be lifted up;" and again, "When you have lifted up the Son of man, then you will know that I am he;" and in the present text, "But having been exalted, I was humbled and brought to distress." And the phrase, "Your wraths passed by me," according to Symmachus, or according to Aquila, "Your wraths passed over me," or according to the Septuagint, "Your wraths passed through me," clearly shows that they did not descend upon him, but passed by him; and that they did not stop, but passed through. And the phrase, "they have terrified me," according to the Septuagint, is similar to what is said in the 23.1068 Gospels: "Now is my soul troubled," and, "My soul is very sorrowful, even to death;" and the rest was fulfilled according to the story, when the apostles, having left him, went away; and Peter denied him even a third time. And in another sense he said all the preceding things, making his own the evils of others; I mean the destruction of the traitor Judas, and the falling away of the whole nation of the Jews; for whom, out of an excess of compassion and love for mankind, as for wicked sons perishing because of their own evils, he took these things upon his own person and lamented. You will understand this by attending to the prophet who says, "This man bears our sins, and suffers for us." Therefore, suffering for them, he cried out, saying: "Your wraths have passed over me, your terrors have terrified me." For he saw the wrath that would not long after come upon them, which suddenly destroyed all their venerable things; so that the Holy of holies and the altar were destroyed from their foundations, and their kings, those who had endured from the succession of their ancestors until that time, were overthrown, and both their autonomy, under which they had lived for a long age, and their worship according to the laws were extinguished, along with their priesthood and their other leaders and rulers; so that not even a trace of them remains to this day. All these things they suffered under the wrath of God, which not long after his passion seized their whole nation because of the things they had dared to do against him; which indeed he was indicating by saying, "Your wraths have passed over me," as if he said, "On account of me," or according to Symmachus, "Through me"; since also according to the true account they suffered all these things because of him. But also, foreseeing their destruction, he said, "Your terrors have terrified me." For even if the terrors of God threatened against them through the prophets did not trouble them at all due to their insensibility, yet, he says, "your terrors terrified me," who saw the outcomes of your fearsome words. Thus, therefore, on account of their impieties, entreating the Father on their behalf, and grieving exceedingly in his soul and being troubled for them, he was sorrowful even to death; since the things of the wrath of God pressed heavily against them, so that he did not even obtain the prayers which he sent up on their behalf; through which, entreating and praying in the Gospels, he fell prostrate, and lying on his face he cried out, saying, "Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me;" then, seeing the Father's will refusing, he added: "Nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will." And going away a second time, he falls on his face and prays, saying: "Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, your will be done;" and going a third time, he uttered the same words.
