you gain the love of God; and if you have sinned, you will obtain forgiveness; and if you have done right, you will receive greater confidence. Let us then achieve the hating of no one, so that God may also love us; so that even if we are liable for ten thousand talents, He may have compassion and mercy. But have you been wronged by him? Therefore pity him, do not hate him; weep and lament, do not turn away. For it is not you who has offended God, but he; and you have even found favor, if you endure. Consider that Christ, when about to be crucified, rejoiced for Himself, but wept for those who were crucifying Him. So also ought we to be disposed; and the more we are wronged, the more we should mourn for those who wrong us. For to us there are many good things from this; but to them, the opposite. But did he insult and strike you in front of everyone? Therefore in front of everyone he shamed and dishonored himself, and opened the mouths of ten thousand accusers, and for you wove more crowns, and gathered for you many heralds of your long-suffering. But did he slander you to others? And what of this, since it is God who will demand an accounting, and not those who heard? For he added to himself a pretext for punishment, so that not only for his own sins, but also for what he said about you, he will give 58.596 an account. And he slandered you to men, but he himself was slandered to God. And if these things are not enough for you, consider that your Master was also slandered, both by Satan and by men, and to those most beloved; and His Only-begotten again the same things. Therefore He said: If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more shall they call them of his household. And not only did that wicked demon slander Him, but he was also believed; and he slandered, not with ordinary things, but with the greatest reproaches and accusations. For he said He was possessed by a demon, and was a deceiver and an enemy of God. But did you also suffer evil after doing good? And for this reason especially mourn and grieve for the one who did it, but for yourself rejoice, because you have become like God, who makes His sun to rise on the evil and on the good. But if imitating God is beyond you—although for one who is sober, not even this is difficult—but nevertheless if this seems too great for you, let us bring you to your fellow servants: to Joseph, who suffered countless things and did good to his brothers; to Moses, who after countless plots prayed for them; to the blessed Paul, who could not even count the things he suffered from them, and asked to be anathema for them; to Stephen, who while being stoned prayed that this sin be forgiven them. And having considered all these things, cast out all anger, so that God may also forgive us all our trespasses, by the grace and love for mankind of our Lord Jesus Christ, with whom to the Father and the Holy Spirit be glory, dominion, honor, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.
58.595 HOMILY 62. And it came to pass, when Jesus had finished these sayings,
he departed from Galilee, and came into the borders of Judæa beyond the Jordan.
1. Having continually left Judea because of their malice, He now sojourns there at last, since the Passion was about to be near; yet He does not for the present go up to Jerusalem, but to the borders of Judea. And when He had come, great multitudes followed Him; and He healed them. He neither continually occupies Himself with the teaching of words, nor with the working of miracles; but now He does this, and now that, varying the salvation of those who attended and followed Him, so that from the miracles He might appear a trustworthy teacher in what He said, and from the teaching of His words, to intensify the gain from the miracles. And this was to lead them to the knowledge of God. But consider this also for me, how whole multitudes
