phi.1793 Phakee: a proper name. Phakelos: a bundle of wood. Phakos: the raw lentil, is oxytone; but phakē, the boiled one, is perispomenon. For from *phakea* comes *phakē*, that which harms the eyes (phaē). I found phakkos with two kappas. Phaistos: a certain peak, or a promontory in Crete. Phallos: a male private part made of wood, which the Greeks, wearing it in the festival of Dionysus, used to dance. *Phaloi* also means the little shields and the crest of the helmet; whence also a three-crested shield. Phanotata: most brightly. Phanopeus and Phanoteus: proper names. Pharmouthi: the month of April among the Romans. Pharisees: these practiced extreme virtue. For they fasted twice a week, on Monday and Thursday; they tithed the tenth part; they gave first-fruits of thirties and fifties; and they paid their sacrifices and prayers most securely; they slept on narrow boards or on thorns or on pebbles, so that, forsooth, they would not suffer anything bodily, or be stolen by dreams and fall into a bodily emission. But indeed both fate and astronomy among them phi.1794 were very much in use. They were called Pharisees from being separated from the others on account of their most exact way of life, as it was considered among them. for *phares* in the Hebrew language is interpreted as separation, or division; for Phares broke the natural order. *Phasek: among the Jews, the so-called Pascha, which signifies the passing over from Egypt.* Pharyngindēn: like *aristindēn*. For the Attics say this when mocking the gluttony of dancers. †Phasis: fame; word; voice. And it is also a river of inner Scythia so called, Phasis, which is called Pheison.† †Phateios: he who is able to be spoken.† †Phenomenon is properly said of that which is perceptible to the sight. whence transparent bodies alone are properly called see-through.† Phaulos: wicked; least bad. From *phō*, *phainō*, *phausō*, *phaulos*, as *pausō*, *paulos*, one who is notorious and manifest for shameful deeds. Phaōphi: a Hebrew name. And of a month. Phalanthoi: the bald. For the white hair is a flower (*anthos*). phi.1795 Phalakros: he who has a bald (*phalon*) crown (*akron*). Or from *phaos* (light), *phalōn*. (Feminine.) Phagedaina: a pestilential disease. Phalanges: rows, ranks. Or the hoplite multitude of several ranks. As if being some *pelanes*. From *pelas*, which is near one another. †Phaleē: the rocky places.† Phalērioessa: well-fed. And Phalēra, a place. Phalkōnilla: a proper name. Phantasia: a power that forms impressions of imaginations; or an affection of the irrational soul produced by some imagined object. †Or the activity concerning the impression in the ruling part of the imaginative power.† Pharagx: from *sparassō*, *sparax*, and by change *pharagx*. It is a fragment of the earth; or the chasm and the valley. Pharetra: an arrow-case. From carrying (*pherein*) and bearing the wounding things. Pharea and Pharin: a city. phi.1796 Phaesimbrotos: she who brings light to mortals. Phasis: report, word. And it is also a river further in Scythia, so called. *Phasis* is also said of a public accusation, when someone reveals that someone possesses public property without having bought it. It is also said of the houses of orphans under guardianship; anyone who wished would report him to the archon. Phausis: dawn; light; brightness. Phaulìa: the wild olive. And simply a kind of olive tree. Phratria: kinship; a company. or a malevolent council. And an agreement of some for evil deeds. But properly a phratry is the third part of a tribe. Pharetra: from carrying (*pherein*) and bearing the wounding things. Phatnē: from *phagein* (to eat), *phagē* and *phatnē* by change of g into t. or from *patō*, to eat, *patnē* and *phatnē*. (Neuter.) Phagylion: a pouch. phi.1797 Phaidron: delightful, with a cheerful face. Phaikasion: the shoe. †Phainolion: a cloak or a high-priestly tunic.† Phaion: that which is between white and black. Phainōmata: things that produce an appearance, but are not in truth anywhere. Phaē: the eyes, because light is poured forth from them. Phaeinon: bright. Phalon: the raised part of the helmet in front of the forehead. For there are some bright studs for the sake of the helmet's adornment. For *phalon* is that which is bright. whence also *phalakros* (bald), he who has a bright (*phalion*) head. -helmet
