And the unlearned man does not know that they took back their own land which had been seized from them, and the things that happened between them were judged within the bounds of truth and by an oath. For Noah, having been saved from the flood, along with his wife and his three sons and three daughters-in-law, alone dividing the whole world, divided it among his three sons, Shem, Ham 3.125 and Japheth, by casting lots at Rhinocolura, as the account has it, and it is nothing empty-sounding or counterfeit. For Rhinocolura is interpreted as Neel, and so the natives naturally call it; but from the Hebrew it is interpreted as lots, since Noah cast the lots there for his three sons. And to Ham fell the lot from Rhinocolura to Gades, having Egypt and the Mareian lake and Ammon, both Libya and Marmarica, Pentapolis, Macate and Macrone and Leptimagna, Syrtis, Mauritania, as far as the so-called Pillars of Heracles and inner Gades. These are the parts to the south. And from Rhinocolura the parts to the east, both Idumaea and Madianitis, both Alabastritis and Homeritis and Axomitis and Bougaia 3.126 and Diba, as far as the land of the Bactrians. And the same lot marks the boundary between Shem's portion to the east. And to Shem fell the lot extending widely, Palestine and Phoenicia and Coele, Commagene, Cilicia, Cappadocia, Galatia, Paphlagonia, Thrace, Europe, Rhodope, Lazia, Iberia, Caspia, Cardyaea as far as Media to the north. From there this lot marks the boundary for Japheth to the north. And to the west, the lot fell to Japheth from Europe to Spain and Britain, Thrace, Europe, Rhodope and from there the adjacent nations. Enetae and Daunians, Iapyges, Calabrians, Latins, Opici, Magardi, as far as the territory of Spain and Gaul, and the upper country of the Scots and Franks. 84. When, therefore, the lots were divided thus, Noah, having called together his three sons, bound them by an oath, that no one should encroach on the lot of his brother and take advantage of his brother. But Canaan, being greedy, the son of Ham, came into the land of the Palestinians and seized it, and the land was called Canaan, because he dwelt in it, having left his own lot because it seemed to be scorching hot. And having settled in the land of Shem, which is now called Judaea, he begot these sons: the Amorite and the Gergesite and the Perizzite and the Jebusite and the Hivite and the Arkite and the Hittite and the Asenaean and the Samarite and the Sidonian and the Philistine. The walls of Jericho therefore fell on their own; for justice avenges injustice. In seven days they encircled the walls and the sabbath was broken, so that justice might be fulfilled. 85.
