or that which is to come forth from the seed of David according to your promise, O Lord? For this horn of ours, with which we will gore our enemies, will be exalted in your good pleasure, you, the Holy One of Israel, our king, taking up the generation of this horn. And these would be prophetic voices crying out the preceding things from their own person, confessing their horn to be the Christ of God who would appear according to the flesh. Then you spoke in a vision to your sons, and said: I have laid help upon one that is mighty; I have exalted one chosen out of my people. I have found David my servant; with my holy oil have I anointed him. For my hand shall help him, and my arm shall strengthen him. The enemy shall have no advantage over him, nor the son of iniquity afflict him. And I will cut down his foes from before his face, and put to flight those who hate him. And my truth and my mercy shall be with him, and in my name shall his horn be exalted. The word, having once mentioned the horn in the preceding things in which it said: In your good pleasure our horn will be exalted, necessarily proceeding teaches what this horn was, and from where it will come, and how it will be exalted. Therefore it says: For the help is of the Lord, that is, of the horn. But of which Lord, if not of the Holy One of Israel our king? For the Lord himself and the Holy One of Israel the king, the Word of God, will be the help of our horn according to the promises he has made, whenever he speaks through the prophets concerning the one who is to come forth from the seed of David. For when, it says, you spoke in a vision to your holy ones, you, O God, promised the preceding things through your own sons the prophets, to whom you revealed the visions of things to come; for through them also, making the promises to David, you used these words: I have laid help upon one that is mighty; I have exalted one chosen out of my people. For which Symmachus interpreted in this manner: I have placed the help of men, I have exalted a chosen one from my people. I have found David my servant, and the things that follow similarly to the Septuagint; the meaning of which is in this manner: Having sought much among men to find one worthy of myself, I with difficulty at last found my servant David, who alone from eternity had purposed through an excess of piety to build for me a house of prayer on earth. Therefore, granting him a reward for his good and pious purpose, in place of the house he purposed, I myself will prepare for myself an all-holy temple from his seed. For the man who was born of the seed of David was a temple of the Word of God who tabernacled in him. Which indeed the Savior himself taught concerning his own body, saying: Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up. 23.1100 And indeed God made the reward to him very suitably to the promise of David. Since, therefore, it says, I found David suitable and worthy of my promises, for this reason I counted him worthy of my help, declaring him chosen, and exalting him above all the people. And in addition to this, since, having sought much, I found him alone worthy of my promises, and having found him I deemed him worthy of the anointing of my holy oil, through which I also made him a Christ, I promise to grant these things to him: My right hand will surely be with him, and my arm will strengthen him. An enemy will not deceive him, nor will a son of iniquity afflict him. But I will also cut down from before him those who hate him, and I will strike those who do him harm; and my confirmation and my grace will be with him. And all these things will be his according to the interpretation of Symmachus; but according to the Septuagint: My hand, it says, will help him, and my arm will strengthen him. The enemy shall have no advantage over him, and the son of iniquity shall not afflict him. And I will cut down from his face
