having worked. And they will rejoice upon their beds. He shows great security, from which he thus added, great relaxation, great gladness, great pleasure. And he says these things so that they might know that the whole thing came about not by their own weapons, nor by their own power, but by the inclination of God, and that this must be drawn forth through humility and meekness. The high praises of God in their throat, and two-edged swords in their hands; to execute vengeance on the nations, reproofs on the peoples. Here he indicates war with dancing, and that singing and praising they will thus overcome. For by "high praises" he means the hymns, the psalms, the thanksgivings. Therefore another also said that the "High praises" are "Hymns." To execute vengeance on the nations, reproofs on the peoples. What is this? Since having prevailed for all that time they were reproaching, he promises to convict them by their deeds, and to show by their deeds that it was not the weakness of God, but their own sins that allowed them to prevail. For he adds and says: To bind their kings with fetters, and their nobles with manacles of iron. Have you seen the abundance of strength? For they did not only drive away the enemies, nor did they push them back. but also, having taken them captive, they returned, showing to all the strength of God. To execute upon them the judgment written. What is, "Judgment written"? Manifest, acknowledged, not able to be handed over to oblivion. For such are the things of God; and by the greatness of the achievements, and by the excess of the wonder-working, it extends to all time. Such, therefore, will be the victory, he says, and such the trophy, as to be clear to all, so plain, as if written on a pillar, and never to be erased. This glory is for all His saints. What is this? To be victorious, or rather not simply to be victorious, but to be victorious in this way, through the alliance of God, through the inclination from above. And see how he remembers the saints, rousing them to the care of life and of virtue. But to me it seems, he calls not only the victory glory, but also the praise, and the melodies, and the hymns, teaching through all things that by praising God, they will put great glory upon themselves, and will show themselves more brilliant, by the grace and loving-kindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom be glory and power, for ever and ever. Amen. ON THE 150TH PSALM. Praise God in His saints. Another, In His holy one. Another, In His sanctified one. He either says this here about the people, or about a holy life and holy men. But see how he closed the book again in thanksgiving, teaching us that 55.496 this must be both the beginning and the end of our deeds and our words. Wherefore Paul also says: Whatever you do in word and deed, always give thanks to God the Father through Him. Thus also the preamble of our prayer has its beginning from this. For to say, Our Father, is characteristic of those giving thanks for the gifts that have been given, and showing them all through this name. For he who said Father, confessed the adoption as sons; and he who confessed the adoption as sons, proclaimed righteousness, sanctification, redemption, the forgiveness of sins, the supply of the Spirit.
