should he not use it rightly; for indeed countless evils spring from this. For this reason, those outside called avarice the acropolis of evils; but the blessed Paul, much better and more strikingly, called it the root of all evils. Considering all these things, 58.609 therefore, let us learn to desire what is worthy of desire, not splendid buildings, nor expensive fields; but men who have great confidence before God, who are rich in heaven, the masters of those treasures, those who are truly rich, who are poor for 58.610 Christ's sake; so that we may obtain the eternal good things, by the grace and loving-kindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, with whom to the Father, together with the Holy Spirit, be glory, dominion, honor, now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen. 58.609 HOMILY 64. Then Peter answering said to Him, "Behold, we have left all things and followed You; what then shall we have?" 1. What "all things," O blessed Peter? The fishing rod? The net? The boat? The trade? Are these the "all things" you speak of to me? Yes, he says. But I do not say this out of ambition, but so that by this question I might bring in the company of the poor. For since the Lord said, "If you would be perfect, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven;" so that none of the poor might say, "What then? If I have no possessions, can I not be perfect?" Peter asks, so that you, the poor man, may learn that you are at no disadvantage from this; Peter asks, so that you may not learn from Peter and doubt (for he was still imperfect, and devoid of the Spirit), but that you may receive the decision from Peter's Teacher and be confident. For just as we do—we often make things our own when speaking on behalf of others—so also did the apostle, bringing this inquiry to Him on behalf of the whole world. Since that he knew his own situation clearly is evident from what was said before; for he who had already received the keys of the heavens from here had much more reason to be confident about things there. But see also how precisely he answers, as Christ had required. For He Himself had asked these two things of the rich man: to give his possessions to the poor, and to follow Him. For this reason, he too puts forward these two things, leaving and following; "For behold, we have left all things," he says, "and followed You." For the leaving was for the sake of following, and the following was made easier by the leaving, and prepared them to be confident and rejoice over having left. What then does He say? "Truly I say to you, that you who have followed Me, in the regeneration, when the Son of Man shall sit on the throne of His glory, you also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel." What then? Will Judas also sit there, he says? By no means. How then does He say, "You shall sit upon twelve thrones"? How will the things of the promise be fulfilled? Hear how and for what reason. There is a law established by God, read to the Jews through Jeremiah the prophet, saying these things: "At one moment I will speak concerning a nation and a kingdom, to pluck up and to destroy; and if that nation turns from its evil, I too will repent of the evil which I thought to do to them. And at another moment I will speak concerning a nation and a kingdom, to build up and to plant; and if they do what is evil in my sight, so as not to hear my voice, I too will repent of the good things which I spoke of doing to them." For I keep this same custom also in the case of good things, He says. For even if I speak of building up, but they show themselves unworthy of the promise, I will no longer do it. Which is what happened in the case of the 58.610 man who was formed. "For the dread of you," He says, "and the fear of you shall be upon the beasts;" and it did not happen; for he proved himself unworthy of the rule; just as Judas also did. For so that some may not despair at the sentences of punishment and become harder, nor become simply more careless at the promises of good things, He cures both of these through what was said before, saying this: "Even if I threaten, do not despair; for you can repent, and undo my
