of another, the hand and the right hand has ruled over all the inhabited world, in rivers and seas; since also his teaching filled the islands of the nations and everywhere on earth every race of men proclaims him Lord and God and king. And what is said here is similar, 'I will set his hand in the sea, and his right hand in the rivers,' to what is said again about him in the 71st Psalm: 'And he will have dominion from sea to sea, and from the river unto the ends of the inhabited world.' Therefore, the Savior, having begun from the baptism in the Jordan river to preach the kingdom of God, filled the whole inhabited world. And it is also said in Zechariah the prophet: 'Rejoice and be glad, O daughter of Zion; behold, your king comes to you, meek and mounted on a beast of burden and a young colt. And he will rule from sea to sea, and from the rivers to the outlets of the earth.' Instead of which the Hebrew has, 'And from the rivers unto the ends of the earth.' But one might speak more mysteriously and otherwise through these things, that his right hand is said to be in rivers, because all those on his right are cleansed through the bath of rebirth, and are deemed worthy of the divine regenera 23.1104 tion through the outpouring of the Holy Spirit; for we have been taught to understand as those on his right those to whom he promised, saying: 'Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry, and you gave me food,' and so on. For these, whom he called his own sheep, he promised to place on the right; wherefore according to a deeper and more mysterious reason, his right hand is said to be in rivers. And his peoples are also called his rivers according to the text, 'The rivers will clap their hands together.' And again: 'The rivers have lifted up, O Lord, the rivers have lifted up their voice; the rivers will lift up their breakings.' For also upon these his own rivers he promises to set his right hand. But his other hand, which he has left for us to understand as being the left, he says he will set in the sea, in the salty waves of life; where also the dragon makes its haunts, according to the text, 'This is the great and wide sea; there are creeping things without number; this dragon which you formed to play in it.' For upon these dragons, and the sea thus understood, not the right, but the other hand besides the right will be placed, punishing and chastising the enemies, and humbling them. But this very one who is signified (it is clear that this is the horn of David), the one who will be born of his seed, will call God Father, since he has been deemed worthy of the indwelling in him of the only-begotten Son of God, and of conjunction and union with him. Therefore also God the Word himself, the Firstborn of all creation, having previously promised and said, 'In my name his horn shall be exalted,' having imparted his own name and his own dignity to the one who was to come from the seed of David, will make him firstborn, so that he also who was born according to the flesh from the seed of David might be called Son of God, and might be named Firstborn because of the union with the Only-begotten of God. For these were the things by which he promised that he would be exalted, saying: 'In my name his horn shall be exalted.' For the only-begotten Son of God has bestowed his own name upon the son of David according to the flesh, proclaiming him also Firstborn and Son of God. And he promised to make him high above the kings of the earth; or according to Symmachus, 'Highest of the kings of the earth.' For he has become higher and stronger than all those who were going to make war against him; shattering the uprisings and persecutions against his Church, and glorifying and strengthening the word of his teaching. But he also says that he will keep his mercy for him forever, and will make his covenant sure
