having kept watch for George, they killed him, and having burned him and made him into ash, they scattered him to the winds. And when Julian died in Persia and the blessed Jovian succeeded to the kingdom, who wrote with much honor and trustworthy letters to Bishop Athanasius and summoned, embraced, and sent him to his own throne, the holy church again received its bishop and was comforted for a little while; but when Jovian died, the blessed Athanasius was again beset by the same persecutions, rumors, and disturbances. Yet he was not moved from the church and his throne, since the Alexandrians sent an embassy on his behalf and the whole city petitioned, after Lucius, who is still alive, the Arian, had been appointed bishop of Alexandria in a foreign land, probably in Antioch, and had often begged the emperor Valens to be sent to the throne of Alexandria * and he, because of the disturbance of the peoples, was unwilling to expel him. Finally, therefore, when Pope Athanasius died, Lucius was sent, inflicting many evils upon the church, the city, the people, the bishops, the clergy, those who were under Athanasius and received him in every church, and upon Peter, who was appointed after Athanasius as his successor in Alexandria. 3.152 These things have been done up to the present day, with some being exiled, both bishops and presbyters and deacons, others suffering capital punishment in Alexandria, others fighting wild beasts, while virgins were killed and many others perished. Amidst these things the church of God is still carried along to this day, from the aforementioned affair of the Meletians and the Arians, who in such ways found the sedition and the pretext to strengthen the same system of evil doctrine, I mean of the Arians. And in the refutation against Arius we will narrate everything in detail. And I will pass over this affair, and come to the heresy of the Arians itself, calling upon God as a helper as I proceed to approach for battle this fearsome and many-headed serpent. Against the Ariomaniacs 49, but in the sequence 69. 1. Arius and the Arians from him succeed in order to these times of those around Meletius and of the holy Peter, bishop of Alexandria, having flourished in the time of Alexander, the holy bishop, the successor of Peter, who deposed this same Arius through a great commotion and a great synod. For he removed him and cast him out of the church and the city, as a great evil that had come upon life. And they say that he was a Libyan by birth, and had become a presbyter in Alexandria, who presided over the church of Baucalis, as it is called. For all the churches of the catholic church in Alexandria happen to be under one archbishop, and presbyters are assigned to them individually, for the ecclesiastical needs of the inhabitants near each church * of theirs, which are also called locally amphoda or laurai by those who 3.153 inhabit the city of Alexandria. And this Arius arose in the times of Constantine the great and blessed emperor, son of the elder Constantius, who was the son of emperor Valerian, who also reigned with Diocletian and Maximian and the others. And all know Constantine, the father of Constantius, Constans, and Crispus, to be glorified in Christianity and in the faith of the fathers, both apostolic and prophetic, which in the churches until this Arius had not been adulterated. And it happened that this man caused a multitude to schism. 2. But while this Arius was a presbyter of the aforementioned Alexander, a spirit of Satan entered him, according to what is written, and stirred him up to raise dust against the church, as
