in sorrows and in lamentations; for this reason in pain and in sweat and in continuous and wretched labor. For the first man sinned out of presumption, expecting equality with God. Therefore he did not remain in possession of what he had, but fell away from these things as well. For such is presumption; it not only adds no right action of life to us, but also cuts away what we have; just as, therefore, humility not only cuts away none of the things that exist, but also adds the things that do not exist. Let us, therefore, emulate this, let us pursue this, so that we may both enjoy the present honor and obtain the future glory, by the grace and loving-kindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, with whom to the Father be glory, might, with the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

58.625 HOMILY 66. And as they were going out from Jericho, great crowds followed him. And behold, two blind men sitting by the road, hearing that Jesus was passing by, cried out, saying: Have mercy

on us, Lord, Son of David. 1. See from where he passed into Jerusalem, and where before this he was staying; which

seems to me especially worthy of investigation, why he did not also formerly depart from there to Galilee, but through Samaria. But this we will leave to the studious. For if someone should wish to examine it closely, he will find John hinting at it well, and having given the reason. But let us keep to the matters at hand, and let us hear of these blind men, who were better than many who could see. For having no one to guide them, nor being able to see him when he was present, they nevertheless strove to come to him, and began to cry out with a loud voice, and being silenced, they shouted all the more. For such is a steadfast soul; it is lifted up by the very things that hinder it. But Christ allowed them to be silenced, so that their zeal might appear greater, and that you might learn that they were worthy of receiving the healing. For this reason He does not even ask, Do you believe? which He does in many cases; for their cry and their approach were sufficient to make their faith manifest to all. From this learn, beloved, that even if we are very humble and cast aside, but approach God with eagerness, we will be able through ourselves to accomplish whatever we ask. See, at least, how these men, having no advocate among the apostles, but even many who were silencing them, were strong enough to overcome the hindrances, and to come to Jesus himself. And yet the evangelist testifies to no boldness of life for them, but their 58.626 eagerness was sufficient for them in place of all things. Let us indeed emulate these men. Even if God postpones the gift, even if there are many who would lead us away, let us not cease asking. For in this way especially will we draw God to us. See, at least, here too how their intense zeal was hindered not by poverty, not by their infirmity, not by not being heard, not by being rebuked by the crowds, nor by anything else. Such is a fervent and laboring soul. What then did Christ do? He called them and said, What do you want me to do for you? They say to him, Lord, that our eyes may be opened. For what reason does he ask them? So that no one might think that he gives other things to those who want to receive other things. For it was his custom everywhere first to make manifest the virtue of those being healed and to reveal it to all, and then to apply the cure; for one thing, that he might lead others to zeal; for another, that he might show that they were worthy to receive the gift. This, at least, he did also in the case of the Canaanite woman, this also in the case of the centurion, this also in the case of the woman with the issue of blood; or rather, that wonderful woman even anticipated the Master's question; but
