only cast it down, and immediately it will come up; not so that other soldiers may be fed, but so that it may remain for you with much merchandise. For here, whatever you give, it is not possible to take back; but there you will receive it back again with much honor, and you will gain greater and more spiritual profits. Here, what is given is a demand; there, it is a use and a loan and a debt. For God has made for you a handwritten bond; For he that has mercy on the poor, he says, lends to God. He has given you both a pledge and sureties, and this though being God. What pledge? The things in the present life, the perceptible, the spiritual, the preludes of things to come. Why then do you put it off and hesitate, having already received so much, and expecting so much? For what you have received are these things: He Himself formed a body for you; He Himself put a soul in you; He honored you with reason alone of those on earth; He gave you the use of all visible things; He granted you the knowledge of Himself; He gave over His Son for you; He bestowed baptism full of so many good things; He gave you a sacred table; He promised a kingdom and the ineffable good things. Having therefore received so many things, being about to receive so many (for I will say the same thing again), do you haggle over perishing money? and what excuse will you have? But surely you see your children, and for their sake you shrink back? And yet, teach them too to gain such profits. For if you had lent silver that was bearing interest, and then the debtor was grateful, you would have chosen ten thousand times to leave the bond to your child instead of the gold, so that his revenues might be great, and he might not be forced to go about and seek others from whom to borrow. And now give this handwritten bond to your children, and leave God as a debtor to them. But you do not sell your fields and give them to your children, but you let them be, so that the income may remain, and the surplus of money may become greater for them from this; but this handwritten bond, richer than any field and revenues, and bearing so many fruits, are you afraid to leave this? and of how much folly and madness would this be? And this, knowing that even if you leave it to them, you yourself will take it and depart again. For such are spiritual things; they have great munificence. Let us not then be poor, nor become inhuman and cruel to ourselves, but let us trade this good merchandise; so that we both may take it and depart, and may leave it to our own sons, and may attain the good things to come, by the grace and love for mankind of our Lord Jesus Christ, with whom to the Father, together with the Holy Spirit, be glory, might, honor, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
58.631 HOMILY 67. And Jesus entered into the temple, and cast out all those who sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the money-changers, and the seats of those who sold
doves, and He says to them, It is written, My house shall be called a house of prayer; but you have made it a den of thieves.
1. This John also says; but he at the beginning of the Gospel, while this one towards the end. Whence it is likely that this happened a second time, and at different times. And it is clear both from the times and from the response. For there He was present at the Passover itself; but here, long before. And there the Jews say: 58.632 What sign do you show us? but here they are silent, although rebuked, because He was already marveled at by all. And this is a greater accusation against the Jews, that when He had done this both once and twice, they still persisted in their trafficking, and said He was an adversary of God, when they should have learned from this His honor for the Father, and His own power. For He both worked miracles, and they saw His words with the deeds
