of good things, let us flee from evil and choose virtue. For thus we shall both live luxuriously here, and shall obtain the crowns to come; which may it be that we all obtain, by the grace and loving-kindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom be glory and power for ever and ever. Amen.
58.639 HOMILY 68. Hear another parable. There was a certain
householder, who planted a vineyard, and set a hedge about it, and dug a winepress, and built a tower; and let it out to husbandmen, and went into a far country. And when the time of the fruit drew near, he sent his servants to receive the fruits. And the husbandmen took his servants, and beat one, and killed another, and stoned another. Again he sent other servants more than the
first, and they did to them likewise. But last of all he sent to them his son, saying, Perhaps they will reverence my son. But when the husbandmen saw the son, they said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and let us seize on his inheritance. And they cast him out of the vineyard, and slew him. When the lord therefore of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those husbandmen? They say to him, He will miserably destroy those wicked men, and will let out his vineyard to other husbandmen, who shall render him the fruits in their seasons. Says to them
Jesus, Did you never read in the Scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner?
1. He intimates many things by this parable: God's providence, which
from above had been exercised toward them; their murderousness from the beginning; that nothing had been omitted of what pertained to their care; that even when the prophets were slain, He did not turn away from them, but even sent the Son; that God is one and the same in the New and the Old Testament; that his death would accomplish great things; that they would endure the utmost punishment for the cross and their daring deed; the calling of the Gentiles, the casting off of the Jews. For this reason He places it after the former one, that He may show from this too that their crime was greater and utterly unpardonable. How, and in what way? Because having received such care, they were defeated by harlots and publicans, and by so much. But behold both His great providence, and their unspeakable laziness. For what belonged to the husbandmen, He did Himself: the setting a hedge about it, the plan 58.640 ting the vineyard, all the other things; and He left little for them, to take care of what was there, and to keep what was given. For nothing was left undone, but all things were completed; and not even so did they profit, and this though they enjoyed so many things from Him. For when they went out of Egypt, He both gave a law, and established a city, and built a temple, and constructed an altar. And He went into a far country; that is, He was long-suffering, not always bringing punishments upon them immediately for their sins; for by his great journey he means long-suffering. And He sent His servants, that is, the prophets, to receive the fruit, that is, obedience, the demonstration through works. But they here too displayed their wickedness, not in not giving the fruit after having enjoyed so much care, which was a matter of laziness, but also in being vexed at those who came. For those not having and owing ought not to be indignant, nor vexed, but to beseech. But they were not only indignant, but even filled their hands with blood; and though owing justice, they themselves demanded justice. For this reason He sent a second and a third group, that both their wickedness might be shown, and the loving-kindness of Him who sent them. And why did He not send the son immediately? That, from what had happened to those men, condemning themselves, and letting go of their anger, they might reverence him when he came. But there are also other reasons; but for now to the
