the present life of those who are persecuted and oppressed for the sake of piety, whose prayer he also sets forth below. And he places before the prayer the exhortation and the consolation, anticipating the supplication of the persecuted and healing their pains in advance, showing by deeds to be fulfilled for them the saying, "While you are still speaking, I will say, ‘Behold, here I am.’" Take courage therefore, O you, he says; for the Lord in whom you have hoped exists, just as He is God the maker and God the creator, and God the savior, and God the benefactor, and God the judge, and God the father of mercies, and God of all consolation, long-suffering and of great mercy and repenting over sins, and having countless other divine conceptions; so also is He a God of vengeances. For He is concerned with the things that are done in the heavens, so that fitting justice is also exacted from the wrongdoers, and to judge righteously and to punish those who must be, and to render to each according to his works. Take courage, therefore, having learned that you have a God of vengeances; for your God is by nature a God of vengeances, and in speaking freely as a God who avenges the wronged, He preaches this explicitly and with boldness through his prophets; thus, at any rate, his doctrine concerning providence is established, according to which He justly and wisely governs all things. For a time, indeed, in the present life, making his sun rise on the just and unjust, and sending rain on the evil and the good, and providing his good things equally to all; but at the proper time becoming a God of vengeances, when he will exact fitting justice from those who have not used his benefactions well. Be exalted, you who judge the earth; render a recompense to the proud. How long shall the sinners, O Lord, how long shall the sinners boast? They will utter and speak injustice; all the workers of iniquity will speak? The divine Spirit, indeed, prophetically made the response concerning the prayer, anticipating what was going to be said after the prayer through foreknowledge of the things contained in the prayer. For this reason the two verses were placed before, containing the response of the Holy Spirit, the one fitting to the prayer. And indeed the words of the supplication to God begin from, "Be exalted, you who judge the earth." Therefore the Word says: From the time that the life of men began to be established, from then sinners began to prevail over the just; as Cain over Abel, and the giants at the time of the flood over those among them; but also Esau over Jacob, and Joseph's brothers over Joseph; and so proceeding through the times, you would find in each generation the sinners rising up against the just. Until when, therefore, O Lord, will this be? How long will sinners drive things to such a point of oppression, so as even to boast in their own impieties, and not even to be silent about what they do, nor to hide their own evil, but even to utter and proclaim their injustices for all to hear? How long, then, will it go on for them while they do these things? But now at last, having ascended to the high throne of your righteous judgment, "Be exalted, you who judge the earth," and, "render a due recompense to the proud," rendering to them punishment. For now they have despised you yourself, as one having nothing lofty, nor seeing, nor judging the earth. Therefore they have supposed the things concerning their own life to be unjudged and unprovided for. But I, praying to be a stranger to their impiety, am persuaded that you are a God of vengeances, and that you are the one who judges all the earth. For even if you humble yourself, using kindness and forbearance and long-suffering, and you hold back your wrath against the impious; yet I, believing that nothing will be unjudged while you oversee all things, beseech and pray that you be exalted and show to all your own greatness and the height of your divinity; so that at last the sinners may cease from revelling
