the people not having obeyed. A SONG TO DAVID, WHEN THE HOUSE WAS BEING BUILT AFTER THE CAPTIVITY. 5. Sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth. Sing to the Lord, bless his name. The Word, having said in the psalm before this one concerning the Jewish people, 'They always go astray in their heart;' and, 'As I swore in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest;' since, having first summoned them to the exultation that is according to God, he found them disobedient, he passes over to the calling of the nations; and he addresses these things to the apostles and disciples of the Savior, which is clear from what is said next, 'Proclaim his salvation from day to day,' and, 'Declare his glory among the nations, his wondrous works among all peoples;' since the words have come to fulfillment through no others than through the apostles of our Savior. For which reason it is fitting for the preceding things to be addressed to them alone, on account of the New Covenant and the new evangelical song, which was preached to all the nations through them. These, then, are commanded to sing a new song to the Lord in all the earth; which they also have fulfilled in deeds, when 'their sound went out into all the earth, and their words to the ends of the world.' And the new song was the saving Gospel, not containing the old statutes from Moses, but the precepts of Christ fitting for all Greeks; 23.1220 for the things of Moses were not such. Primarily, then, he commands to sing the new song to the Lord himself; but since not all the earth was able to comprehend who the Lord was, nor to know the deeper words concerning the Lord; necessarily, next, in a secondary sense, he adds: 'Sing to the Lord, bless his name,' having such a meaning: if the nations throughout the whole earth are not able to comprehend who is the creator of the entire cosmos, and the Lord and master of all things; and if they are not able to perceive how, being the creative Word of God, he governs and directs all things by an unseen and invisible power; but it is at least sufficient for them, as an introduction, also to bless his name. For the name of the Lord itself, and his mere appellation being praised and blessed, is sufficient to benefit those who bless in the greatest degree, more than those who bless Abraham, to whom it was said: 'Those who bless you will be blessed.' But let those deemed worthy of the new world sing the new song after the captivity throughout the whole world. Wherefore the inscription of the psalm says, 'When the house was being built after the captivity.' When, therefore, the great house of God, his Church, was about to be built among all the nations after the captivity of souls by the great and wise architect, our Lord and Savior, concerning whom the prophet says: 'He shall build my city, and he shall turn back the captivity of my people;' then the Savior himself, about to fulfill in deeds the things foretold by the prophets, taking in his hands and reading through the passage of Isaiah that speaks in his person: 'The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me; he has sent me to preach good news to the poor, to proclaim release to the captives, and recovery of sight to the blind,' after the reading, having rolled up the book, he said: 'Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing;' teaching that he himself is the one anointed not with bodily ointment like the bodily anointed ones, but with the Spirit of the paternal
