to be called an apostle. What consolation, then, will we have, what defense, when having such great examples, we are not moderate? For just as they are worthy of ten thousand crowns, having been the first to walk the path of virtue; so we are liable to ten thousand punishments, not being drawn to the same zeal, neither after those who have departed and lie in the scriptures, nor after these who are living and admired for their deeds. For what could you say, not correcting yourself? Do you not know letters, nor have you pored over the Scriptures, that you might learn the virtues of the ancients? Indeed, this too is a charge against you, that when the church is continually open, you do not enter and partake of those pure streams. But even if you did not know of those who have departed through the Scriptures, you ought to have seen these who are living. But is there no one to guide you? Come to me, and I will show you the dwellings of these saints; come, and learn what is useful from them. These are lamps shining everywhere on the earth; they sit as walls around the cities. For this reason they have taken to the wilderness, that they might also teach you to despise the tumults in our midst. For they, being strong, can enjoy calm even in the midst of the surge; but you, who are swamped from every side, need quiet, and to catch a little breath from the successive waves. Go there continually, therefore, that having cleansed the perpetual stain by their 58.673 prayers and exhortations, you may both lead the best life here and obtain the good things to come, by the grace and loving-kindness of our Lord Jesus Chri 58.674 st, through whom and with whom to the Father be glory, power, honor, together with the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
58.673 HOMILY 73. Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for
you devour widows' houses, and for a pretense make long prayers: therefore you shall receive the greater damnation.
1. Henceforth he satirizes them for their gluttony; and the terrible thing is that
not from the rich, but from widows they glutted themselves, and they ground down their poverty, which they ought to have been relieving. For they did not simply eat, but devoured. Then also the manner of their trafficking was more grievous: For a pretense making long prayers. For everyone who does something evil is worthy of punishment; but he who takes his occasion from piety, and uses this as a cloak for his wickedness, is liable to a much more grievous punishment. And for what reason did he not reject them? Because the time did not yet permit it. For this reason He lets them be for the time being; but through what He says, He makes the people undeceived, so that they are not drawn into the same zeal on account of their high position. For since he said, "Whatever they tell you to do, do it;" he shows how much they pervert, lest from that it might be thought by the foolish that He permits them everything. Woe to you, for you shut up the kingdom before men. For you neither go in yourselves, nor do you allow those who are entering to go in. But if it is an accusation to help no one, what excuse is there for also harming and hindering? And what is meant by, "those who are entering"? Those who are fit. For when they had to command others, they made the burdens unbearable; but when they themselves had to do something necessary, on the contrary, not only did they do nothing themselves, but, what is much more wicked, they corrupted others also. These are they who are called plagues, who make the destruction of others their work, standing in direct opposition to teachers. For if it is the work of a teacher to save the one who is perishing, to destroy the one who is about to be saved is the work of a pest. Then again another charge: "Because you compass sea and land to make one proselyte; and when he is made, you make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves;" that is, not even having barely snared him, and with countless toils, does it cause them to spare him
