to Israel, that is, he fulfilled the promises made to them, and brought them to pass; wherefore all the ends of the earth have seen the Salvation of our God. For when the Gospel was preached under all of heaven and in all the inhabited world as a testimony to all the nations, according to the prophecy of Christ, all the ends of the earth saw Christ, the Salvation of God. Shout to God, all the earth, sing, and rejoice and make psalm. Make psalm to the Lord on the harp, on the harp and with the voice of a psalm, with ductile trumpets, and with the sound of a horn trumpet. Shout before the Lord King, and the rest. According to the literal sense, he says, join to the hymns also psalmic instruments; but according to the spiritual sense, the harp is practice; and the voice of the psalm is contemplation. Glorify therefore, he says, the Lord through practice and contemplation, and to the psalm that is struck by the instrument, that is, the activities of the body according to virtue, let also some voice sing, which is the contemplation of what is to be practiced; for he calls the harmony of the body with the soul a harp. And it is possible to see this law being continually fulfilled in the churches; for with the spiritual harp we strike up the divine melody. We also make our mouths rational harps, and we use the teeth instead of strings, and the lips instead of bronze; and the tongue, moving more sharply than any plectrum, produces the harmonious sound of the notes; and the mind moves the tongue, like some musician making its transition with knowledge. This harp is more pleasing to God than the inanimate one. And he himself is a witness, crying out through the prophet: Take away from us the sound of your songs, and I will not listen to the voice of your instruments. With ductile trumpets, and with the sound of a horn trumpet. The words of the apostles of our Savior are called ductile trumpets because of the tested and fired nature of their faith; and of horn because of the practical aspect. For horn trumpets are of oxen; and the ox is a working animal. And concerning the apostles Paul also says: Is it for oxen that God cares? Or does he say it entirely for our sake. Therefore, the voices of the holy apostles of the Savior were at once both ductile and horn trumpets. Κι 23.1236 Otherwise, do not hesitate to call a harp the entire people of Christ, composed of different souls as from many strings, and sending up one prayer and thanksgiving to God. A PSALM OF DAVID. 8. The Lord has reigned, let the peoples be angry, he who sits upon the cherubim, let the earth be shaken. The psalm is without an inscription among the Hebrews; and it is also one of those that announce the kingdom of Christ. For since God reigns over all things, one would say that no one would be angry, but at the kingdom of Christ the present discourse says that peoples are angry; and it means those from the circumcision and those from the nations who disbelieve in him. And who the Lord is he clarifies, saying next: He who sits above the cherubim. For zeal for the salvation of the nations bites and grieves the unbelievers; for they did not understand the prophetic voices concerning his kingdom; Let the earth be shaken. For the demons, who were once very powerful, were weakened, so that all their powers were shaken, and their activities ceased; and the men who inhabit the earth, having changed, recognized the ruin of their ancestral error, having inscribed the God Logos as their Lord. Moreover, also those who disbelieve in him were greatly shaken, being moved and astonished at the power of his teaching. And the phrase, "sitting," he has said as speaking to men. For the incorporeal nature is incomprehensible and indescribable. The Lord is great in Zion, and he is high above all the
