we should do his commandments, and we have trampled the serpent and crushed the head of the dragon in the power of God; to whom be glory, honor, power, to the Father in the Son, to the Son in the Father, with the Holy Spirit for ever and ever, amen. But leaving this dead hydra, the seven-headed and many-cleft one, let us proceed to the next things as is customary, beloved, calling upon God who is always our helper to take the same care of us and of those who wish to read this work, for the healing of those who have been bitten and for the correction of those not yet tried in evils. 3.232 Concerning the schism of the Audians ˉν, but in sequence ˉο. 1. The Audians, or Odians, are an order *. These, being ascetics, have their dwelling in monasteries, being an order in deserts and nearer to cities in suburbs and wherever they have their own 3.233 monasteries or enclosures. This Audius became their leader in the time of Arius, when the synod of those who deposed him was convened against Arius. The man was from Mesopotamia, a distinguished person in his own country because of the purity of his life and his zeal for God and faith; who often, seeing what happened in the churches, would oppose such men to their face, rebuking bishops and presbyters, saying: It is not right for these things to be so, these things ought not to be done so, as a man speaking the truth and as is wont to be done by men who speak freely for love of the truth, especially those who live the most ascetic life. Wherefore, seeing such things, as I said before, in the churches, he was compelled to speak in reproof, and was not silent. For if he saw any of the clergy who were lovers of money, either a bishop or a presbyter or any other of the canon, he would certainly speak out. And if he saw anyone living in luxury and wantonness or anyone corrupting the things in the ecclesiastical preaching and ordinance of the church, the man, not bearing it, would, as I said, put forth his argument. And this was burdensome to those who did not have an approved life. For this reason he was insulted and contradicted, was hated, endured being buffeted and pushed and dishonored, for a considerable time assembling in the churches, until some, taking it ill, cast the man out for such a reason. But he did not bear it, but rather strove to speak the truth, and not to depart from the bond of the one union of the holy catholic church. But as he himself and those with him were often beaten and suffered terrible things, groaning heavily, he takes the necessity of the insults as his counsellor. For he separates himself from the church, and many with him break away, and thus he worked the division, having nothing different in the faith, but believing most rightly, both he and those with him; although one must say that in some small matter he and those with him behaved contentiously. 2. For besides confessing wonderfully concerning the Father and Son and Holy Spirit, as the catholic church holds, and most orthodoxly observing it, he had admirable things in all the other aspects of his life; for working with their own hands, 3.234 he himself and the bishops under him and the presbyters and all the rest are supported; but later, after being cast out of the church, he is ordained a bishop by another bishop who was debating the same things and had departed from the church. But concerning what I undertook to say, since I have been in a digression, I will take it up again and go through the narrative, I mean, concerning the most rigid and peculiar and contentious saying from holy scripture that is sung among them. For he and those with him wish to define 'according to the image', which God has given to Adam, in a crude way, that this is fulfilled according to the body, from the so-called saying, "Let us make man in our image and likeness." and then he adds
