being a priest? he receives a very great addition to his punishment from his dignity. For this reason, other women who committed fornication were put to death; but the daughters of priests were burned, the lawgiver showing abundantly how great a punishment awaits a priest who commits this sin. For if he required a greater penalty from the daughter because she was a priest's daughter, much more from the consecrated man himself. Did someone commit fornication by force? she is also free from punishment; did a rich woman commit fornication, and another a poor one? again here also is a difference. And this is clear from what we said before about David. Did someone commit fornication after the coming of Christ? if he depart uninitiated, he will pay a more severe penalty than all of those. Did someone commit fornication after baptism? here there is no longer any excuse left for the sin. And Paul, indicating this very thing, said: "Anyone who has set aside the law of Moses dies without mercy on the evidence of two or three witnesses. How much worse punishment do you think will be deserved by the one who has trampled underfoot the Son of God, and has profaned the blood of the covenant, and has insulted the Spirit of grace?" Has a consecrated man now committed fornication? this is indeed the very crown of evils. Have you seen how many differences there are in one sin? One before the law, another after the law, another that of a consecrated man, another of a rich woman and a poor one, of a catechumen and a believer, of a priest. And from understanding there is also a great difference: "For he who knew his Lord's will, and did not do it, will be beaten with many stripes." And to sin after the examples brings greater punishment. For this reason he says: "But you, not even seeing later, did repent," though you enjoyed so much 58.694 care. For this reason also he reproaches Jerusalem, saying: "How often would I have gathered your children, and you were not willing?" And those who are in luxury; this is the matter of Lazarus. And from the place also the sin becomes more grievous; which he himself indicating said: "Between the temple and the altar." And from the quality of the offenses themselves: "It is not a wonder, if one is caught stealing;" and again, "You have slain your sons and your daughters; this is beyond all your fornications and your abominations." And again from the persons: "If a man sins against another man, they will pray for him; but if he sins against God, who will pray for him?" And when one surpasses those who are much worse in his carelessness; which also in Ezekiel he reproaches: "You have not even acted according to the ordinances of the nations." And when one is not even made wise by the examples of others: "She saw her sister," he says, "and she justified her." And when one has enjoyed greater care: "For if in Tyre," he says, "and Sidon these mighty works had been done, they would have repented long ago; but it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon than for that city." Have you seen the perfect exactness, and how not all who commit the same sins pay the same penalty? For when we have enjoyed long-suffering and gained nothing, we shall suffer worse things. And Paul indicates this, saying: "But according to your hardness and your impenitent heart you are treasuring up for yourself wrath." Knowing these things, therefore, let us not be scandalized, nor be disturbed by anything that happens, nor introduce the dizziness of our reasonings; but yielding to the incomprehensible providence of God, let us take care for virtue, and flee from wickedness; that we may also obtain the good things to come, by the grace and love for mankind of our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom and with whom be glory to the Father, together with the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.
58.693 HOMILY 76. Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, and let him who is on the housetop not come down to take what is in his house; and let him who is in his field, not
turn back to take his clothes.
