For confessing the genuineness of his divinity he says, “what proceeds from the Father and takes from mine.” 6. And how many other testimonies are there? But since your mockery is clear to all, being of error and not of truth, it will be detected not only by the intelligent, but also by those who know even a little of the coherence of the divine scripture, for which reason I shall not require many testimonies or a lengthy refutation, for your narrative and your false belief are easily captured, wherefore, considering what has been said to you to be sufficient, 3.255 like the form of a feeble and powerless monster sprung from the earth, having crushed it with the foot of reason and with the truth of the word of God, or like a tapeworm or an earthworm, I will leave it. For the heresy of this deceived one has already been scattered in a short † time. But I will proceed to the next topics, as is my custom, calling upon God. - - - Against the Marcellians 52, and of the sequence 72. 1. And again at the same time, for all these were at one time, Marcellus came to be in Ancyra. For he was still alive until now from that year, and died after about two years, more or less. And he himself also made a certain division in the church from the beginning of the same time, but he showed a certain slight suspicion, being compared to Sabellius and Novatus because of the Arians' irritation with him, supposedly on account of † the reasoning of his opposition to the Arians. Whence he is also blasphemed by certain orthodox persons, as having, as I said, his mockery in part from the Sabellians. But some defended him, claiming that it was not so, but that he had lived rightly and insisting that he was right in his thinking. Wherefore there has been much inquiry concerning this man. And the hidden things of his thought are known to God, but those who came from him and were catechized, either ignoring his thought or not relating his true teachings, were unwilling to confess the three hypostases, as the truth holds, that the Godhead is one, the doxology one, the Trinity being homoousios and differing in nothing of its own glory, being a perfect Trinity and one Godhead, one power, one substance, being neither some confusion nor subordinate. 3.256 But this man, wishing to say something at great length among certain people, showed himself to be similar in thought to Sabellius. Wherefore this too was convicted and numbered among the heresies. I will set forth again also the exposition of the statement which the same Marcellus made to Julius the blessed bishop of the Romans, supposedly defending himself. And from his defense and his letter it will be clear that he has thought things contrary to the faith of the truth. For if he had not thought other things, for what would he have come to a defense, unless perhaps statements set forth by him that were not right and that troubled some people brought him to this defense? Therefore this is the copy: Copy of the letter of Marcellus, whom the synod deposed on account of heterodoxy. 2. “To the most blessed fellow minister Julius, Marcellus in Christ, greeting. Since some of those who were previously condemned for not believing rightly, whom I refuted in the council at Nicaea, have dared to write against me to your piety, as if I were not thinking rightly nor ecclesiastically, striving to transfer their own accusation to me, for this reason I thought it necessary, having come to Rome, to remind you, that you might summon those who wrote against me, so that they, having come, might be refuted by me on both counts, that both what they have written against me happens to be false and that they still now persist in their former error and 3.257 have dared terrible things against both the churches of God and us who preside over them. Since, therefore, they were not willing to appear, although you sent presbyters to them and I have spent a year and three whole months in Rome, I thought it necessary, as I am about to depart from here, to [give] you my faith in writing with all
