Here, as I have often said, the word, *Then*, does not indicate a sequence of time following what was said before. For where He wanted to indicate a sequence, He added, *Immediately after the tribulation of those days*; but here it is not so, but, *Then*; not indicating the things immediately after these, but the things in the time in which these things are about to happen, which He was about to say. So also when it says, *In those days came John the Baptist*, it does not mean the time immediately following, but the time after many years, and the time in which those things happened which He was about to relate. For after discoursing on the birth of Jesus, and the coming of the Magi, and the death of Herod, He immediately says: *In those days came John the Baptist*; and yet thirty years had passed in between. But this is a custom of Scripture, to use this mode of history. So indeed also here, passing over all the intermediate time, from the capture of Jerusalem until the preludes of the consummation, He speaks of the time a little before the consummation. *Then* therefore, 58.697 *if any man shall say to you*, He says, *Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not*. For the time being He makes them secure concerning the place, speaking of the characteristics of His second coming, and the signs of the deceivers. For not as in the first He appeared in Bethlehem, and in a small corner of the world, and with no one knowing from the beginning, so also then, He says; but openly and with all manifestation, and so as not to need one to announce these things. And this is no small sign of His not coming secretly. But observe how here He says nothing about war; for He is clarifying the discourse about His coming; but about those attempting to deceive. For some in the time of the apostles deceived many; *For many shall come*, He says, *and shall deceive many*; but others before His second coming, who were also more bitter than those. *For they shall show*, He says, *signs and wonders, so as to deceive, if possible, even the elect*. Here He means the antichrist, and indicates some who will also minister to him; concerning whom Paul also speaks thus. For having called him the man of sin and the son of perdition, he added: *Whose coming is after the working of Satan, with all power and signs and lying wonders, with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish*. And see how He secures them. *Go not forth*, He says, *into the desert, enter not into the secret chambers*. He did not say, Go and do not believe; but, Go not forth, nor go away. For the deceit then will be great, because there will also be signs of deceit. 3. Having said then how that one comes, that is, in a place, He says how He Himself also comes. How then does He come? *For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be*. *For wheresoever the carcase is, there will the eagles also be*. How then does the lightning appear? It needs no one to announce it, it needs no herald, but to those sitting in houses, and in chambers, in the twinkling of an eye it is shown throughout the whole world. So shall that coming be, appearing at once everywhere because of the flashing forth of glory. And He speaks another sign: *Where the carcase is, there will the eagles also be*; signifying the multitude of angels, of martyrs, of all the saints. Then He speaks of fearful wonders. And what are the wonders? *Immediately after the tribulation of those days*, He says, *the sun shall be darkened*. The tribulation of what days does He mean? Of the antichrist and the false prophets. For then there will be great tribulation, there being so many who deceive. But it is not extended for a length of time. For if the Jewish war was shortened for the sake of the elect, much more shall this temptation be cut short for the sake of these same ones. For this reason He did not say, after the tribulation, but, *Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun shall be darkened*; for almost all things happen together. For both the false prophets and the false Christs will cause a tumult when they come, and immediately He Himself will be present. For no small confusion is then about to possess the world. And how does He come? With the creation itself being transformed at last; for *The sun*
