will be darkened, not by disappearing, but by being overcome by the light of his presence; And the stars will fall; for what need will there be of them any longer, when there is no night? 58.698 And the powers of the heavens will be shaken; and very rightly so, seeing such a great change taking place. For if when the stars were made, they so shuddered and marveled; (For when the stars were made, he says, all the angels praised me with a loud voice;) how much more, seeing all things being transformed, and their fellow servants giving an account, and the whole world standing before a fearful tribunal, and those from Adam until his coming being required to give an account for all that they have done, will they not shudder and be shaken? Then will appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven; that is, the cross, being brighter than the sun; since that one is darkened and is hidden, but this one appears; it would not appear, unless it were much brighter than the rays of the sun. But for what reason does the sign appear? So that by great abundance the shamelessness of the Jews might be silenced. For having the cross as the greatest evidence of his righteousness, Christ thus comes to that tribunal, showing not only his wounds, but also his shameful death. Then the tribes will mourn. For there is no need of an accusation, when they see the cross; and they will mourn, because they gained nothing from his death, because they crucified him whom they ought to have worshipped. Have you seen how he fearfully described his coming? how he raised the spirits of the disciples? For this reason he puts the sorrowful things first, and then the good things, that in this way also he might comfort them and give them rest. And he reminds them again of the passion and of the resurrection, and with a glorious form he mentions the cross, so that they might not be ashamed, nor be grieved, since he comes then displaying it as a sign. But another says, that They will look upon him whom they have pierced. For this reason they will mourn, seeing that this is he. And since he also mentioned the cross, he added that They will see the Son of Man coming, no longer on the cross, but on the clouds of heaven, with power and great glory. For lest when you have heard of the cross, he says, you should think it is something gloomy again; for he will come with power and great glory. And he bears it, that their sin may be self-condemned; just as if someone struck by a stone should show the stone itself, or his blood-stained garments. And he comes in a cloud, as he was taken up; and seeing these things, the tribes wail. However, their terrors will not stop at wailing; but the wailing will be, that they may from within themselves bring forth the verdict, and condemn themselves; and then again He will send his angels with a great trumpet, and they will gather together the elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other. But when you hear this, consider the punishment of those who remain. For they will pay not only that penalty, but this one also. And as he said above, that they will say, Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord; so here, that They will mourn. For since he had spoken to them of grievous wars, that they might learn that with the terrors here there also await them torments there, he introduces them as mourning, and being separated from the elect, and being given over to Gehenna; and from here again rousing the disciples, 58.699 and showing them from how many evils they will be delivered, and how many good things they will enjoy. 4. And why then does he call them by angels, if he comes so openly? Honoring them in this way also. But Paul, that they will be caught up in the clouds. And he said this also, when he was speaking about the resurrection. For he himself, he says, the Lord will descend from heaven with a command, with the voice of an archangel. So that when they have risen, the angels will gather them, and when they have been gathered, the clouds will snatch them away; and all these things happen in an instant, in the twinkling of an eye. For he does not indeed call them while remaining above, but he himself comes with a trumpet. And what do the trumpets and the sound mean? For rousing, for gladness, for
