1. Since He had said, that immediately after the tribulation of those days, and they were asking after how long, and desired to know the very day itself, for this reason He also puts forward the parable of the fig tree, showing that the interval is not long, but that the coming will follow immediately; which, then, not only through the parable, but also through the words that follow, He made clear, saying: Know that it is near, even at the doors. From this He also prophesies something else, a spiritual summer, and a calm that will be on that day from the present winter for the righteous; but for sinners the opposite, winter from summer; which He showed in what follows, saying that the day will come upon them while they are living luxuriously. But He did not put forward this of the fig tree for this reason alone, to show the interval; for it was possible to represent it in another way; but that from this also He might confirm the word as something that will certainly come to pass. For just as this must be, so also that. For wherever He wishes to say that something will certainly come to pass, He brings forward natural necessities, both He Himself, and the blessed Paul imitating Him. For this reason also, when discoursing about the resurrection, He says: The grain of wheat that falls into the earth, unless it dies, remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Wherefore also the blessed Paul, having been taught, used the same example, when discoursing to the Corinthians about the resurrection. For "Fool," he says, "what you sow is not brought to life unless it dies." Then, so that they might not quickly come to this again and ask, "When?" He brings to their remembrance the things that had passed, saying: Truly I say to you, this generation will not pass away, until all these things take place. All these things, what things? Tell me. The things concerning Jerusalem, the things concerning the wars, the famines, the pestilences, the earthquakes, the things concerning the false christs, the false prophets, the sowing of the Gospel everywhere, the seditions, the tumults 58.702, all the other things which we have said will happen up to His coming. How then, he says, did He say, "this generation"? Not speaking of the generation then living, but of that of the faithful. For He is accustomed to characterize a generation not by time only, but also from a mode of religion and life; as when He says, This is the generation of those who seek the Lord. For what He said above, "For all these things must come to pass;" and again, "The Gospel will be preached;" this He also makes plain here, saying, that all these things will certainly come to pass, and the generation of the faithful will remain, not being cut off by any of the things mentioned. But Jerusalem will be destroyed, and the greater part of the Jews will perish, but nothing will prevail over this generation, not famine, not pestilence, not earthquake, not the tumults of wars, not false christs, not false prophets, not deceivers, not those who betray, not those who cause to stumble, not false brethren, not any other such trial. Then, to lead them still more to faith, He says: Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away; that is, it is easier for these fixed and immovable things to be destroyed, than for any of my words to fall away. And let him who argues against these things examine what has been said, and having found them true (for he certainly will find them so), let him from the things that have passed believe also in the things to come, and let him examine all things with accuracy, and he will see the outcome of events bearing witness to the truth of the prophecy. He has put the elements forward, on the one hand showing that the Church is more honorable than heaven and earth; and on the other hand showing Himself from this to be the Creator of the universe. For since He was discoursing about the end of the age, a thing disbelieved by many, He brought forward heaven and earth, displaying His unspeakable power, and with great authority showing that He is the Master of the universe, and by these means making what was said credible even to those who strongly doubted. But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only. By saying, "not even the angels," He stopped their mouths, so that they should not seek to learn what those do not know; and by saying, "nor the Son," He prevents them not only 58.703 from learning, but also from asking. For that through

αʹ. Ὅτι γὰρ διὰ
