the benefit of one's neighbors. For here talents are the ability of each one, whether in leadership, or in money, or in teaching, or in any such matter whatsoever. Let no one say, "I have one talent, and can do nothing." For you can win approval even with one. For you are not poorer than that widow, you are not more unlearned than Peter and John, who were both uneducated and illiterate men, but yet because they showed eagerness, and did all things for the common good, they laid hold of the heavens. For nothing is so dear to God as to live for the common good. For this reason God has given us speech, and hands, 58.715 and feet, and strength of body, and mind, and understanding, so that we might use all these things both for our own salvation and for the benefit of our neighbors. For our speech is useful not only for hymns and thanksgivings, but it is also profitable for teaching and exhortation. If we use it for this, we have emulated the Master; but if for the opposite, the devil. Since Peter too, when he confessed Christ, was called blessed for having spoken the things of the Father; but when he tried to refuse the cross and forbade it, he was severely rebuked, for thinking the things of the devil. But if where what was said was of ignorance, the accusation was so great; when we sin much willingly, what pardon shall we have? Let us therefore utter such things, that the words may be clearly those of Christ. For not only if I should say, "Rise up and walk," nor if I should say, "Tabitha, arise," do I then speak the things of Christ; but much more if, when reviled, I bless, if, when insulted, I pray for the one who insults me. Formerly, then, I said that our tongue is a hand, touching the feet of God; but now I say much more, that our tongue is a tongue, imitating that of Christ, if it shows the fitting exactness, if we utter those things which he wishes. And what is it that he wishes us to utter? Words full of gentleness and meekness; just as he himself also spoke, saying to those who insulted him, "I do not have a demon"; and again, "If I have spoken wrongly, bear witness to the wrong." If you also speak in this way, if you speak for the correction of your neighbors, you possess a tongue like his. And God himself says these things: "For he who brings out the precious from the worthless shall be as my mouth," he says. When, therefore, your tongue is as the tongue of Christ, and your mouth becomes the mouth of the Father, and you are a temple of the Holy Spirit, what honor could then be equal to this? For not even if your mouth were made of gold, nor if of precious stones, would it be destined to shine so brightly as it does now, illuminated by the adornment of gentleness. For what is more desirable than a mouth that knows not how to insult, but has practiced blessing [and speaking kindly]? But if you cannot bear to bless him who curses, be silent, and for the time being achieve this; and proceeding on the way and striving as you ought, you will also arrive at that, and you will acquire such a mouth as we have described. 4. And do not think what has been said is audacious. For the Master is a lover of mankind, and the gift comes from his goodness. It is audacious to have a mouth resembling the devil's, to possess a tongue like that of an evil demon, especially one who partakes of such mysteries and communes with the very flesh of the Master. Therefore, considering these things, become like him to the best of your ability. The devil will no longer be able even to look upon you, having become such a person. For he recognizes the royal character; he knows the weapons of Christ, by which he was defeated. And what are these? Gentleness and meekness. For when he attacked him on the mountain, he dashed him to the ground and laid him low, not by being recognized as Christ, but he ensnared him by these words, he captured him by gentleness, he routed him by meekness. You do this too; if you see a person who has become a devil and is approaching you, conquer in this way too. Christ 58.716 has given you the power to become like him to the best of your ability. Do not be afraid on hearing this. The fear is in not becoming like him. Speak therefore like him, and you have become

Πρώην μὲν οὖν ἔλεγον, ὅτι χείρ ἐστιν ἡ γλῶττα ἡμῶν, τῶν τοῦ Θεοῦ ἁπτομένη ποδῶν· νῦν δὲ πολλῷ πλέον λέγω, ὅτι γλῶττά ἐστιν ἡ γλῶττα ἡμῶν, τὴν τοῦ Χριστοῦ μιμουμένη, ἐὰν τὴν προσήκουσαν ἀκρίβειαν ἐπιδείξηται, ἂν ἐκεῖνα φθεγγώμεθα, ἅπερ ἐκεῖνος βούλεται. Τί δέ ἐστιν ἃ ἐκεῖνος ἡμᾶς βούλεται φθέγγεσθαι; Τὰ ἐπιεικείας γέμοντα ῥήματα καὶ πραότητος· ὥσπερ οὖν καὶ αὐτὸς ἐφθέγγετο, λέγων τοῖς ὑβρίζουσιν αὐτὸν, Ἐγὼ δαιμόνιον οὐκ ἔχω· καὶ πάλιν· Εἰ μὲν κακῶς ἐλάλησα, μαρτύρησον περὶ τοῦ κακοῦ. Ἐὰν οὕτω καὶ σὺ λέγῃς, ἐὰν εἰς διόρθωσιν τῶν πλησίον λαλῇς, κέκτησαι γλῶτταν ἐοικυῖαν ἐκείνῃ. Καὶ ταῦτα αὐτός φησιν ὁ Θεός· Ὁ γὰρ ἐξάγων τίμιον ἐξ ἀναξίου ὡς στόμα μου ἔσται, φησίν. Ὅταν οὖν ἡ γλῶττά σου ὡς ἡ γλῶττα ᾖ τοῦ Χριστοῦ, καὶ τὸ στόμα σου γένηται στόμα τοῦ Πατρὸς, καὶ τοῦ Πνεύματος τοῦ ἁγίου ναὸς ᾖς, ποία ταύτης λοιπὸν ἴση γένοιτ' ἂν τιμή; Οὐδὲ γὰρ εἰ ἀπὸ χρυσίου συνέκειτό σου τὸ στόμα, οὐδὲ εἰ ἀπὸ λίθων τιμίων, οὕτως ἔμελλε λάμπειν ὡς νῦν, τῷ κόσμῳ τῆς ἐπιεικείας καταυγαζόμενον. Τί γὰρ στόματος ποθεινότερον οὐκ εἰδότος ὑβρίζειν, ἀλλ' εὐλογεῖν [καὶ χρηστολογεῖν] μεμελετηκότος; Εἰ δὲ οὐκ ἀνέχῃ εὐλογεῖν τὸν καταρώμενον, σίγησον, καὶ τοῦτο τέως κατόρθωσον· καὶ ὁδῷ προβαίνων καὶ σπουδάζων ὡς χρὴ, καὶ ἐπ' ἐκεῖνο ἥξεις, καὶ κτήσῃ στόμα τοιοῦτον οἷον εἰρήκαμεν. δʹ. Καὶ μὴ νομίσῃς τολμηρὸν εἶναι τὸ λεχθέν. Φιλάνθρωπος γάρ ἐστιν ὁ ∆εσπότης, καὶ τῆς ἀγαθότητος αὐτοῦ τὸ δῶρον γίνεται. Τολμηρόν ἐστι, διαβόλῳ στόμα ἔχειν ἐοικὸς, δαίμονος πονηροῦ κεκτῆσθαι γλῶτταν ὁμοίαν, μάλιστα τὸν μυστηρίων τοιούτων μετέχοντα, καὶ αὐτῇ κοινωνοῦντα τῇ σαρκὶ τοῦ ∆εσπότου. Ταῦτ' οὖν ἀναλογιζόμενος, γενοῦ κατ' ἐκεῖνον εἰς δύναμιν τὴν σήν. Οὐκέτι σοι λοιπὸν ὁ διάβολος οὐδὲ ἀντιβλέψαι τοιούτῳ γενομένῳ δυνήσεται. Καὶ γὰρ ἐπιγινώσκει τὸν χαρακτῆρα τὸν βασιλικόν· οἶδε τοῦ Χριστοῦ τὰ ὅπλα, δι' ὧν ἡττήθη. Τίνα δὲ ταῦτά ἐστιν; Ἐπιείκεια καὶ πραότης. Καὶ γὰρ ὅτε ἐν τῷ ὄρει προσβάλλοντα αὐτὸν κατέῤῥαξε καὶ ἐξέτεινεν, οὐχὶ γνωριζόμενος ὅτι Χριστὸς ἦν, ἀλλ' ἀπὸ τῶν ῥημάτων αὐτὸν ἐσαγήνευσε τούτων, ἀπὸ ἐπιεικείας εἷλεν, ἀπὸ πραότητος ἐτροπώσατο.
