but for the devil and his angels. For concerning the kingdom when He said, Come, inherit the kingdom, He added, prepared for you before the foundation of the world; but concerning the fire, not so, but, that which is prepared for the devil. For I prepared the kingdom for you, but the fire not for you, but for the devil and his angels; but since you have cast yourselves into it, account it to yourselves. Not only in this way, but also through what follows, as if making a defense to them, He also lays down the causes. For I was hungry, and you did not give me to eat. For even if he who approached was an enemy, are not these sufferings sufficient to break and bend even the merciless man: hunger, and cold, and bonds, 58.720 and nakedness, and sickness, and to wander everywhere under the open sky? For these things are sufficient even to dissolve enmity. But you did not do these things even for a friend, and one who is a friend, and a benefactor, and the Lord. And if we see a hungry dog, we often feel pity; and if we behold a wild beast, we are moved; but seeing the Lord, are you not moved? and how are these things worthy of a defense? For if this were the only thing, is it not sufficient for a reward? I do not mean the hearing of such a voice in the presence of the world from Him who is seated on the paternal throne, and to receive a kingdom, but is not the deed itself sufficient for a reward? But now, with the world present, and that ineffable glory appearing, He proclaims you and crowns you, and acknowledges you as the one who fed Him and gave Him lodging; and He is not ashamed to say such things, so that He might make your crown more splendid. For this reason these are justly punished, and those are crowned, according to grace. For even if they have done countless things, the honor is of grace, that for things so small and worthless, so great a heaven and kingdom and such great honor should be given to them. And it happened that when Jesus had finished these words, He said to His disciples: You know that after two days the Passover is coming, and the Son of Man is delivered up to be crucified. Again He speaks seasonably of the passion, when He had reminded them of the kingdom, and of the recompense there, and of the immortal punishment; as if He said: Why are you afraid of temporary terrors, when such good things await you? 3. But consider for me how He has handled more innovatively and has overshadowed in all the preceding that which especially grieved them. For He did not say, You know that after two days I am delivered up; but what? You know that after two days the Passover is coming; and then He added, that He is delivered up to be crucified; showing that what was happening was a mystery, and a feast and a festival being celebrated for the salvation of the world, and that He suffered all things with foreknowledge. For this reason, as this was sufficient for their consolation, He said nothing to them now about the resurrection; for it was superfluous, having discoursed so much about it, to speak again. And in another way, as I said, He shows that even the passion itself is a deliverance from countless evils, by reminding them through the Passover of the old benefits in Egypt. Then the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders of the people were gathered together in the court of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas, and they took counsel together that they might seize Jesus by stealth, and kill Him. But they said, Not during the feast, lest a tumult arise among the people. Have you seen the unspeakable corruption of the Jewish affairs? Attempting lawless deeds, they come to the high priest, wishing to receive authority from the very one from whom they ought to have been prevented. And how many high priests were there? For the law wills that there be one; but then there were many. From which it is clear, that the Jewish institutions were beginning to be dissolved. For Moses, as I said, commanded that there be one, and that another should be appointed when he died, and by his life he measured the exile of those who had committed involuntary manslaughter. How then were there many high priests at that time? They later became annual. And this the evangelist made clear, when he was speaking about Zacharias, saying that he was of the course of Abijah. Therefore 58.721 here he calls them chief priests, those who were from the high priests. And what did they counsel? that they might
