she has done this for a memorial of her. And whence 58.725 did this thought come to them? They had heard the Master saying, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice, and accusing the Jews, that they had omitted the weightier matters, judgment, and mercy, and faith; and having discoursed much on the mount concerning almsgiving, and from these things they reasoned among themselves and considered that if He does not accept whole burnt offerings, nor the old worship, much less the anointing with oil. But they thought thus; but He, seeing her intention, allows it. For her reverence was great, and her earnestness unspeakable; wherefore also, condescending greatly, He permitted the oil to be poured even upon His head. For if He did not refuse to become man, and to be carried in the womb, and to be nourished with milk, why are you amazed if He does not reject this? For just as His Father endured the savor of burnt offerings and smoke, so did He also from the harlot—as I have already said—accepting her intention. For Jacob also anointed a pillar to God, and in the sacrifices oil was offered, and the priests were anointed with ointment. But the disciples, not knowing her mind, blamed her unseasonably, and by what they alleged, they show the woman's munificence. For by saying that it could have been sold for three hundred denarii, they showed how much she had spent on the ointment, and how much magnanimity she had displayed. Wherefore He also rebuked them, saying, Why do you trouble the woman? And He adds a reason, wishing to remind them again of the passion: For she has done it, He says, for my burial. And another reason: For you have the poor always with you, but me you have not always; and, Wherever the gospel shall be preached, what she has done shall also be told. Do you see how again He foretells the going forth to the Gentiles, and thereby comforts them concerning His death, if indeed such power will shine forth after the cross, that the preaching will be poured out over all the earth? Who then is so wretched as to look against so great a truth? For behold, what He said has come to pass; and wherever you may go in the world, you will see this woman also being proclaimed. And yet her person was not distinguished, nor did she have many witnesses, nor did the event take place in a theater, but in a house, and in the house of a certain leper, with only the disciples present. 2. Who then sounded it forth and caused it to be spread abroad? The power of Him who said these things. And the mighty deeds of countless kings and generals, of which even the records remain, are passed over in silence; and they who raised up cities, and surrounded them with walls, and won wars, and set up trophies, and enslaved many nations, are not known even by hearing or by name, though they also erected statues and established laws; but that a harlot woman poured out oil in the house of a certain leper, with ten men present, this all sing throughout the world, and so much time has passed, and the memory of what happened has not faded; but even Persians, and Indians, and Scythians, and Thracians, and Sauromatians, and the race of the Moors, and those who inhabit the British Isles carry about the story of what was done in secret in a house in Judea by a woman who had been a harlot. Great is the love of the Master for mankind. He bears with a harlot, with a harlot kissing His feet, and moistening them with oil, and wiping them with her hair, and He accepts her, and rebukes those who accuse her. For 58.726 it was not right that the woman should be perplexed over so great earnestness. But consider this also for me, how lofty they were then and zealous for almsgiving. And why did He not say simply, She has done a good work; but first, Why do you trouble the woman? So that they might learn not to demand the higher things from the weaker at the outset. For this reason He does not examine the matter simply by itself, but in connection with the person of the woman. And yet if He were making a law, He would not have added the woman; but that you might learn that these things were said for her sake, so that they might not maim her budding faith, but rather nourish it, for this reason He says, teaching us whatever good thing is done by anyone, even if it is not very precise, to accept it and to cherish it, and to the
