“the true vine,” which the Father alone cultivates, having produced for us a cluster of joy; he is “the living water, which if a thirsty man receives, he will not thirst again, but it is in his belly leaping up into eternal life.” Having received from this, the new husbandmen have imparted it to the world, but the old husbandmen have withered and destroyed it through unbelief. With his own blood he sanctifies the nations, and with his own Spirit he leads the called up to the heavens. “For as many as are led by his Spirit, they” live for God; but as many as are not, are still reckoned for death, these are called psychical or carnal. Therefore, to reject the works of the flesh, which are the strongholds of sin, and to put to death the members of death through his grace, and to receive the Holy Spirit, which we did not have, he commands, which gives life to me who was long dead, which if I do not receive, I will die; for without his Spirit, everyone is dead. “If therefore his Spirit is in us, he who raised him 3.318 from the dead will give life to our mortal bodies through his Spirit dwelling in us.” But, I think, both dwell in the righteous one, Christ and his Spirit. 4. But if Christ from the Father is believed to be God from God, and his Spirit from Christ or from both, as Christ says, “who proceeds from the Father” and “he will take from what is mine,” and Christ is from the Holy Spirit, “for that which is in her,” he says, “is from the Holy Spirit,” the voice of an angel, I understand the mystery that redeems me, by faith, by hearing alone, by love for the one who came to me. For God knows himself, Christ proclaims himself, the Holy Spirit reveals himself to the worthy. In the holy scriptures, a Trinity is announced to us and is believed without curious prying, without contention, from the watchwords of hearing. From this faith comes the salvation of grace, “from faith, righteousness apart from the works of the law.” For it is written that “from the hearing of faith the Spirit of Christ” is given to those who are being saved. And the universal faith is signified by the voices of the preachers, as I at least think, being catechized from the scriptures: three holy things, three co-holy things; three existing things, three co-existing things; three formed things, three conformed things; three active things, three co-active things; three hypostatic things, three co-hypostatic things, being with one another, this holy Trinity is called, being three, one harmony, one Godhead of the same substance, of the same Godhead, of the same hypostasis, like from like, working an equality of grace of Father and Son and Holy Spirit. But the “how” is left for them to teach. “For no one knows the Father except the Son, nor the Son except the Father, and to whomever the Son chooses to reveal him”; and he reveals through the Holy Spirit. Therefore these three being either from him or by him or to him, are understood worthily by each, as they reveal themselves, light 3.319 fire spirit and by other likenesses of visions, I think, as the man who is ministered to is worthy. Therefore God himself, who in the beginning said “let there be light, and there was light,” the visible, is himself the one who enlightened us to see “the light,” “the true, which enlightens every man coming into the world,” “send out your light and your truth,” David says, he is the Lord who said “in the last days I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh, and their sons and their daughters will prophesy and their young men will see visions,” showing us three persons of a holy liturgy from a threefold existing hypostasis. 5. “I say therefore that Christ has become a minister of the circumcision for the sake of God's truth, in order to fulfill the promises,” and we have received from the divine scriptures that the Holy Spirit ministers together thus: Christ is sent from the Father, the Holy Spirit is sent; Christ speaks in the saints, the Holy Spirit speaks; Christ heals, the Holy Spirit heals; Christ sanctifies, the Holy Spirit sanctifies; Christ baptizes in his name, the Holy Spirit baptizes. Thus say the scriptures: “You will send forth your Spirit, and
