Therefore the Son is from light, and for this reason "dwelling in unapproachable light". And God is wholly power, and for this reason the Son is "Lord of powers". God is wholly wisdom, therefore the Son is wisdom from wisdom, "in whom are all the treasures of wisdom hidden". And God is wholly life, therefore the Son is life 3.324 from life; "for I am the truth and the life". And the Holy Spirit is from both, Spirit from Spirit. "For God is Spirit", † a divinity is the giver of gifts, most true, illuminating, a comforter, an announcer of the Father's counsels. For as the Son is the "angel of great counsel", so also is the Holy Spirit; "but we have received," he says, "the Spirit of God, that we might know the things freely given to us by God, which we also speak, not in persuasive words of wisdom, but in the demonstration of the Spirit of God, comparing spiritual things with spiritual." 8. But someone will say, "So do we say there are two sons, and how is he only-begotten?" "On the contrary, who are you to answer back to God?" For if he calls the Son the one from him, and the Holy Spirit the one from both, which, being understood by faith alone by the saints, are luminous, light-giving, have a luminous energy and make an accord of light with the Father himself, listen by faith, O you, that the Father is Father of a true Son, wholly light, and the Son is Son of a true Father, light from light, not as things made or created by name only; and the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of truth, a third light from the Father and the Son; but all other things are by adoption or by calling, not like these in energy or power or light or concept; as one might say, "I have begotten and exalted sons" or as one might say, "I said, you are gods and all sons of the Most High" or as one might say, "who has begotten the drops of dew" or as one might say, "from whom every family in heaven and on earth" or as one might say, "I who make the thunder firm and create the spirit". For the true Father is not like other fathers or patriarchs, beginning to be a father or at some time ceasing to be a father. For if he begins to be a father, then he was once the son of another father before he was the father of the only-begotten; and by analogy, fathers are considered children of fathers, and to find the one who is truly Father of the lineage is to go on to infinity. Nor is the true Son like other children by adoption, new to being a son. For if 3.325 he is new to being a son, there was a time when the Father was not the Father of the only-begotten. Nor is the Spirit of truth created or made like other spirits. Nor is he called "the angel of great counsel" like other angels. For some have a beginning and an end, but others have an inconceivable beginning and power; and some create all things for infinite ages, co-working with the Father, but others are created by these as they might wish; and some serve these, but others are served by all of creation; and some heal created things, but others receive healing from them; and some are judged according to worth, but others possess righteous judgment; and some exist in time, but others happen not to be in time; and some illuminate all things, but others are illuminated by these; and some call infants to the height, but others are called by the perfect one. And some bestow grace on all, but others receive gifts; and, to speak once for all, some praise holiness in the heavens of heavens and other invisible places, but others, being praised, worthily provide gifts to the worthy. 9. But Scripture speaks of very many spirits: "He who makes his angels spirits, and his ministers a flame of fire," and, "all you spirits, praise the Lord." And the gift "of discernment of spirits" is given to the worthy. For some are heavenly, "rejoicing in the truth," but others are earthly, suited for deceit and error, and others are subterranean, children of the abyss and of darkness. For the Gospel says, "he begged... that he not send them away into the abyss"; and likewise he also commanded the spirits. And he drove out spirits with a word and "did not permit them to speak." And it is called "a spirit of judgment and a spirit of burning," it is also called a spirit of the world; "But we have not the spirit of the world
