I will not obey; which little by little led him to self-will. Christ, therefore, wishing to check this, permitted the denial. For since he did not endure the words of Christ himself, nor of the prophet; (and yet for this reason He brought in the prophet, that they might not contradict;) but nevertheless, since he did not endure the words, he is taught through deeds. For that He permitted it for this reason, that He might correct this in him, hear what He says: But I have prayed for you, that your faith may not fail. For He said this, reproving him sharply, and showing that his fall was more grievous than that of the others, and in need of greater help. For there were two charges: that he contradicted, and that he set himself before the others; or rather a third, that he attributed the whole to himself. Healing these things, therefore, He allowed the fall to happen; and for this reason, leaving the others aside, He addresses him. For Simon, He says, Simon, behold, Satan has asked to sift you as wheat; that is, to disturb, to trouble, to tempt; but I have prayed for you, that your faith may not fail. And why, if he asked for all, did He not say of all, I have prayed? Is it not clear that it is what I said before, that reproving him, and showing that his fall was more grievous than that of the others, He turns His discourse to him? And for what reason did He not say, But I did not permit it, but, I have prayed? He speaks humbly then, going toward His passion, that He might show His humanity. For He who built the Church upon his confession, and so fortified it that countless dangers and deaths might not prevail against it, He who gave him the keys of the heavens, and made him lord of so much authority, and in no way needed prayer for these things; (for He did not say, I have prayed; but with authority, I will build my Church, and, I will give you the keys of the heavens;) how did He need prayer, to strengthen the shaken soul of one man? For what reason then did He speak thus? For the reason I have stated, and also on account of their weakness; for they did not yet have the proper opinion concerning Him. How then did he deny? He did not say, That you may not deny, but, So that your faith may not fail, so that you may not utterly perish. For this happened by His providence. For fear cast everything 58.742 out; for it was immeasurable; and it became immeasurable, because God stripped him completely of His own support; and He stripped him completely, because the passion of self-will and of contradiction was also vehement in him. Therefore, that He might uproot it, for this reason He allowed the agony to so seize him. For that this passion was grievous in him, he was not satisfied with the previous things, having contradicted both the prophet and Christ, but even after this, when Christ said to him, Truly I say to you, that this night, before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times, he says: Even if I must die with you, I will not deny you. But Luke notes that the more Christ forbade, the more vehemently Peter opposed Him. What is this, O Peter? When He said, One of you will betray me, you feared lest you be the traitor, and you compelled the disciple to ask, although you were conscious of nothing of the sort in yourself; but now when He is crying out and saying plainly, All of you will be scandalized, do you contradict? and not only once, but twice and many times? For this is what Luke says. From where, then, did this happen to him? From much love, from much delight. For since he was freed from that agony concerning the betrayal, and saw the traitor, he then spoke with confidence, and rose up against the others, saying: Even if all will be scandalized, yet I will not be scandalized. But the matter was also quietly one of ambition; for even at the supper, they were reasoning which of them was the greatest; thus the passion was troubling them. For this reason He was checking him, not pushing him to the denial; God forbid; but leaving him destitute of His help, and exposing human nature. See, at any rate, how subdued he is after this. For after the resurrection, when he said, But what about this man? and was silenced, he no longer dared to contradict anything as he did here, but was silent.

Ἐπειδὴ γὰρ οὐδὲ αὐτοῦ ἠνέσχετο, οὔτε τοῦ προφήτου· (καίτοι διὰ τοῦτο καὶ τὸν προφήτην ἐπηγάγετο, ἵνα μὴ ἀντείπωσιν·) ἀλλ' ὅμως ἐπειδὴ οὐκ ἠνέσχετο τῶν ῥημάτων, παιδεύεται διὰ τῶν ἔργων. Ὅτι γὰρ διὰ τοῦτο συνεχώρησεν, ἵνα τοῦτο ἐν αὐτῷ κατορθώσῃ, ἄκουσον τί φησιν· Ἐγὼ δὲ ἐδεήθην περὶ σοῦ, ἵνα μὴ ἐκλίπῃ σου ἡ πίστις. Τοῦτο γὰρ σφόδρα αὐτοῦ καθαπτόμενος ἔλεγε, καὶ δηλῶν ὅτι τὸ πτῶμα αὐτοῦ τῶν ἄλλων χαλεπώτερον, καὶ πλείονος δεόμενον βοηθείας. Καὶ γὰρ δύο τὰ ἐγκλήματα ἦν, καὶ ὅτι ἀντεῖπε, καὶ ὅτι τῶν ἄλλων ἑαυτὸν προὔθηκε· μᾶλλον δὲ καὶ τρίτον, ὅτι τὸ πᾶν ἑαυτῷ ἀνέθηκε. Πῶς οὖν ἠρνήσατο; Οὐκ εἶπεν, Ἵνα μὴ ἀρνήσῃ, ἀλλ', Ὥστε μὴ ἐκλιπεῖν τὴν πίστιν, ὥστε μὴ τέλεον ἀπολέσθαι. Τῆς γὰρ αὐτοῦ κηδεμονίας τοῦτο γέγονε. Καὶ γὰρ ὁ φόβος πάντα 58.742 ἐξέβαλεν· ἄμετρος γὰρ ἦν· ἄμετρος δὲ ἐγένετο, ἐπειδὴ σφόδρα αὐτὸν ἐγύμνωσεν ὁ Θεὸς τῆς ἑαυτοῦ ῥοπῆς ἐγύμνωσε δὲ σφόδρα, ἐπειδὴ καὶ σφοδρὸν ἐν αὐτῷ τὸ πάθος ἦν τῆς αὐθαδείας καὶ τῆς ἀντιῤῥήσεως. Ἵν' οὖν πρόῤῥιζον ἀνέλῃ, διὰ τοῦτο εἴασεν οὕτω κατασχεῖν αὐτὸν τὴν ἀγωνίαν. Ὅτι γὰρ χαλεπὸν ἦν ἐν αὐτῷ τὸ πάθος τοῦτο, οὐκ ἠρκέσθη τοῖς προτέροις, καὶ προφήτῃ καὶ Χριστῷ ἀντειπὼν, ἀλλὰ καὶ μετὰ ταῦτα εἰπόντος αὐτῷ τοῦ Χριστοῦ, Ἀμὴν λέγω σοι, ὅτι ταύτῃ τῇ νυκτὶ, πρὶν ἀλέκτορα φωνῆσαι, τρὶς ἀπαρνήσῃ με, λέγει· Κἂν δέῃ με σὺν σοὶ ἀποθανεῖν, οὐ μή σε ἀπαρνήσομαι. Ὁ δὲ Λουκᾶς ἐπισημαίνεται, ὅτι ὅσῳ ἀπηγόρευεν ὁ Χριστὸς, τοσούτῳ ἠναντιοῦτο ὁ Πέτρος ἐκ περισσοῦ. Τί ταῦτα, ὦ Πέτρε; Ὅτε μὲν ἔλεγεν, Εἷς ἐξ ὑμῶν παραδώσει με, ἐφοβοῦ μὴ σὺ ᾖς ὁ προδότης, καὶ ἠνάγκαζες τὸν μαθητὴν ἐρωτῆσαι, καίτοι οὐδὲν σαυτῷ συνειδὼς τοιοῦτον· νυνὶ δὲ διαῤῥήδην αὐτοῦ βοῶντος καὶ λέγοντος, ὅτι Πάντες σκανδαλισθήσεσθε, ἀντιλέγεις; καὶ οὐχ ἅπαξ μόνον, ἀλλὰ καὶ δὶς καὶ πολλάκις; Τοῦτο γὰρ ὁ Λουκᾶς φησι. Πόθεν οὖν αὐτῷ τοῦτο συνέβη; Ἀπὸ πολλῆς ἀγάπης, ἀπὸ πολλῆς ἡδονῆς. Ἐπειδὴ γὰρ ἀπηλλάγη τῆς ἀγωνίας ἐκείνης τῆς κατὰ τὴν προδοσίαν, καὶ τὸν προδότην εἶδε, θαῤῥῶν ἔλεγε λοιπὸν, καὶ τῶν ἄλλων κατεξανίστατο λέγων· Κἂν πάντες σκανδαλισθήσονται, ἀλλ' ἐγὼ οὐ σκανδαλισθήσομαι. Ἠρέμα δὲ καὶ φιλοτιμίας τὸ πρᾶγμα ἦν· καὶ γὰρ ἐν τῷ δείπνῳ, τίς αὐτῶν μείζων ἐστὶν, ἐλογίζοντο· οὕτως αὐτοῖς παρηνόχλει τὸ πάθος. ∆ιὰ τοῦτο αὐτὸν ἐκώλυεν, οὐκ ὠθῶν αὐτὸν ἐπὶ τὴν ἄρνησιν· μὴ γένοιτο· ἀλλ' ἔρημον τῆς αὐτοῦ βοηθείας ἀφεὶς, καὶ τὴν φύσιν ἐλέγχων τὴν ἀνθρωπίνην. Ὅρα γοῦν μετὰ ταῦτα πῶς κατεσταλμένος ἐστί. Καὶ γὰρ μετὰ τὴν ἀνάστασιν, ἐπειδὴ εἶπεν, Οὗτος δὲ τί; καὶ ἐπεστομίσθη, οὐδὲν ἀντειπεῖν λοιπὸν ὡς ἐνταῦθα ἐτόλμησεν, ἀλλ' ἐσίγησε.
