of spiritual fire, the tongue reddened with the most awesome blood? Consider what an honor you were honored with; what a table you enjoy. That which angels look upon and shudder, and do not dare to look upon fearlessly because of the lightning flashing from there, with this 58.744 we are fed, with this we are mingled, and we have become one body and one flesh of Christ. Who will tell of the mighty acts of the Lord? Who will make all his praises heard? What shepherd feeds the sheep with his own limbs? And why do I say, shepherd? Often there are mothers who, after the pangs of childbirth, give their children to other nurses; but he did not endure this, but he himself feeds us with his own blood, and in all things he weaves us into himself. But consider: he was born of our substance. But this is nothing to all, he says; and yet it is for all. For if he came to our nature, it is clear that it was to all. But if to all, then also to each one. And how did not all reap the benefit from this? he says. This is not because of him who chose this for all, but because of those who were unwilling. He mingles himself with each of the faithful through the mysteries; and those whom he begot, he nourishes through himself, and does not give them to another. and in this he persuades you again, that he took your flesh. Let us not then be slothful, having been deemed worthy of so great a love and honor. Do you not see the children with what eagerness they grasp the breast? with what impetus they fix their lips to the nipple? With such eagerness let us also approach this table, and the nipple of the spiritual cup; or rather with much more let us draw, as nursing infants, the grace of the Spirit; and let our one pain be, not to partake of this food. The works set before us are not of human power. He who then did these things at that supper, he also now works them. We hold the rank of ministers; but he who sanctifies and transforms them. himself. Therefore let no Judas be present, no lover of money. If anyone is not a disciple, let him withdraw; the table does not receive such people. For with my disciples, he says, I keep the Passover. This is that table, and it has nothing less. For it is not that Christ creates that one, and a man this one; but he also creates this one. This is that upper room, where they were then; from there they went out to the Mount of Olives. Let us also go out to the hands of the poor; for this place is the Mount of Olives. For the multitude of the poor are olive trees planted in the house of God, dripping the oil that is useful to us there, which the five virgins had; but the others, not taking it from here, were lost. Taking this, let us enter, that we may meet the Bridegroom with bright lamps; taking this, let us go out from here. Let no inhuman person approach, no one cruel and merciless, no one at all unclean. 2. These things I say to you who partake, and to you who minister. For it is necessary also to speak to you, that you may distribute these gifts with much diligence. No small punishment is for you, if, being conscious of any wickedness in someone, you allow him to partake of this table. His blood will be required from your hands. Even if he be a general, even if a prefect, even if he himself who wears the diadem, should he approach unworthily, prevent him; you have an authority greater than his. 58.745 But if you had been entrusted with guarding a spring of water for a clean flock, and then you saw a sheep bearing much mud on its mouth, you would not have allowed it to stoop down and muddy the stream; but now, having been entrusted not with a spring of water, but of blood and spirit, and seeing some who have a sin worse than earth and mud approaching, are you not indignant, nor do you keep them away? and what pardon could you have? For this reason God has honored you with this honor, that you may discern such things. This is your dignity, this your security, this your whole crown, not that you should go about clothed in a white and shining tunic. And how do I know, he says, this person and that person? Not concerning the
