He taught that the matter was not of necessity, nor of weakness, but of a certain secret dispensation. For he knew beforehand that he would come, and not only did he not flee, but he even went to meet him. While he was yet speaking, behold, Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and elders of the people. Fine instruments for priests! they come with swords and clubs. And Judas, it says, was with them, one of the twelve. Again he calls him one of the twelve, and is not ashamed. And he who betrayed him had given them a sign, saying, ‘Whomever I shall kiss, that is he: seize him.’ Alas! how much wickedness did the soul of the traitor receive! For with what eyes did he then look at the Teacher? with what mouth did he kiss him? O the defiled mind! what did it plot? what did it dare? what token of betrayal did it give? ‘Whomever I shall kiss,’ he says. He was confident in the meekness of the Teacher; which, most of all, 58.748 was able to shame him, and deprive him of all excuse, because he was betraying one so gentle. And for what reason does he say this? Because often, having been seized by them, he passed through, them not knowing him. But nevertheless, this would have happened then too, if he himself had not willed it. Indeed, wishing to teach him this very thing, he then blinded their eyes, and he himself asked, ‘Whom do you seek?’ And they did not know, although they were with lanterns and torches, and had Judas with them. Then when they said, ‘Jesus,’ he says, ‘I am he whom you seek;’ and here again, ‘Friend, for what are you here?’ For after showing his own strength, he then finally permitted it. But John says that even until that very hour he was correcting him, saying, ‘Judas, do you betray the Son of man with a kiss?’ ‘Are you not ashamed even of the manner of the betrayal?’ he says. But nevertheless, since not even this stopped him, he deigned to be kissed, and gave himself up willingly, and they laid their hands on him, and seized him on that very night on which they ate the Passover; so did they boil and rage. But nevertheless they would have had no power, if he himself had not permitted it. Yet this does not deliver Judas from his unbearable punishment, but rather condemns him even more, because having received such proof of his power, and of his meekness, [and of his gentleness,] and of his kindness, he became more savage than any beast. Knowing these things, therefore, let us flee from avarice. For that, that drove him to madness then; that trains those who are caught by it to the utmost cruelty and inhumanity. For when it makes one despair of his own salvation, it much more prepares him to disregard that of others. And so tyrannical is this passion, that it sometimes even overcomes the most violent carnal love. Therefore I am greatly ashamed, that many, by being sparing of money, have often restrained licentiousness; but for the fear of Christ they have been unwilling to live soberly and with dignity. Therefore, let us flee from it; for I will not cease always saying this. For why do you gather gold, O man? Why do you make your slavery more bitter? Why your prison more harsh? Why do you make your anxiety more severe? Consider to be yours the nuggets buried in the mines, those in the royal treasuries. For even if you had that mass of wealth, you would only guard it, and would not use it. For if you do not now use what you have, but abstain from it as if it belonged to others, much more, if you had more, would you suffer this. For the lovers of money are accustomed, the more they amass, the more to be sparing of it. ‘But I know,’ one says, ‘that these things are mine.’ Therefore the possession is in supposition only, not in enjoyment. ‘But I was going to be feared by men,’ one says. Nay, rather an easy prey both to rich and poor, and to robbers, and to false accusers, and to servants, and simply to all who wish to plot against you, this is what you would have become. For if you wish to be feared, cut off the handles, by which all who are eager to do this are able to take you and grieve you. Or do you not hear the proverb that says, that ‘a poor and naked man not even a hundred men coming together can ever strip’? For he has the greatest protector 58.749 in poverty, which not even the king himself
