had exemption from such things, although they were entrusted with a more corporeal ministry; but we 58.764 who are called to the very shrines of the heavens, and entering into the true Holy of holies, take upon ourselves the cares of merchants and petty-retailers. From this comes great neglect of the Scriptures, and indolence in prayers, and disregard for all other things. For it is not possible to be divided between both with fitting earnestness. Therefore I pray and beseech that many fountains may gush forth for us from all sides, and that your eagerness may become for us the threshing-floor and the wine-press. For thus the poor will be more easily nourished, and God will be glorified, and you will give more abundantly in charity, and will enjoy the eternal good things; which may it be granted for us all to obtain, by the grace and love for mankind of our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.
58.763 HOMILY 86. But Jesus stood before the governor; and the governor asked him, saying; Are you the king of the Jews? And Jesus
said, You say so. And when he was accused by the chief priests and elders, he answered nothing.
1. Do you see what is examined first? that which they continually twisted up and down the most.
For when they saw Pilate making no account of the legal matters, they bring the accusation to public crimes. Thus they also did in the case of the apostles, always putting these things forward, and saying that they go about preaching a certain king, Jesus, speaking as if of some mere man, and casting suspicion of tyranny upon them. Whence it is clear that both the tearing of the tunic, and the being astounded, was a pretense. And they were stirring up and twisting everything, so as to cast him into death. This, at any rate, Pilate also asked then. What then of Christ? You have said it. He confessed to being a king, but a heavenly king; which he also said more clearly elsewhere, answering Pilate, that My kingdom is not of this world; so that neither they, nor he, might have an excuse for making such accusations. And he sets forth an irrefutable argument, saying: If I were of this world, my servants would have fought, that I should not be delivered up. For this very reason, in order to ward off this suspicion, he both paid tribute, and commanded others to pay it; and when they wished to make him king, he fled. Why then, he says, did he not bring these things forward then, when accused of tyranny? Because having countless proofs from the facts of his power, his gentleness, his meekness, they willingly blinded themselves and acted maliciously, and the tribunal was corrupt. For these reasons, indeed, he answers nothing, but is silent, answering only briefly, so as not to get a reputation for arrogance from his continual silence, when the high priest adjured him, when the governor asked; but to their accusations he says nothing further; for he was not likely to persuade them. Just as the prophet from of old, declaring this very thing, said: In his humiliation his judgment was taken away. At these things the governor marveled. For it was indeed worthy of wonder to see him displaying so much meekness 58.764, and being silent, him who had countless things to say. For they were not accusing him from being conscious of any evil in him, but from malice and envy alone. When, at any rate, they set up false witnesses, why, when they had nothing to say, did they still press on, and seeing Judas breathe his last, were not pricked in their hearts, and Pilate washing his hands? For he also did many things at that very time, so that they might become sober; but by none of these things did they become better. What then of Pilate? Do you not hear how many things these men testify against you? For he wanted him to be acquitted by making a defense,
