punishment. And this happens when some hold fast to their own preconceptions contrary to what is approved in the Scriptures. Those among the Corinthians also thought it to be a mark of perfection to taste all things without distinction, even forbidden things; but yet this was not of perfection, but even of the utmost lawlessness. For this reason Paul rebukes them severely, and said they were liable to the ultimate penalty. Others again think it is a mark of piety to have long hair on their heads. And this too is among the things forbidden, and has much shame in it. Again, others pursue grieving over their sins immoderately as something profitable; but this too is a scheme of the devil, as Judas showed; for from this he even hanged himself. For this reason Paul also was afraid for the one who had committed fornication, lest he suffer some such thing, and he advised the Corinthians to snatch him away quickly, Lest such a one be swallowed up by overmuch sorrow. Then, showing that such a thing is from his snare, he says: Lest we should be outwitted by Satan; for we are not ignorant of his designs, that he attacks with much guile, he says. For if he waged war openly and frankly, the victory would be easy and simple; but rather, even now, if we are sober, it will be easy. For against each of these ways God has armed us. For persuading us not to despise even these small things, hear what he advises, saying: Whoever says to his brother, 'You fool!' will be liable to the hell of fire; and, He who has looked with lustful eyes is a complete adulterer. And He declares wretched those who laugh, and everywhere He destroys the beginnings and seeds of evil, and says that we must give an account for every idle word. For this reason Job also atoned for the thoughts of his children. But against despairing, He says, Does not he who falls rise up again? Or does he who turns away not turn back? and again, I have no pleasure in the death of the sinner, but that he turn and live; and, Today, if you hear His voice. And many other such words and examples are found in the Scripture. But 58.769 against perishing under a guise of piety, hear Paul saying: Lest such a one be swallowed up by overmuch sorrow. Knowing these things, therefore, let us fortify against all the ways that divert the lazy from the understanding that comes from the Scriptures. And do not say, "What is it, if I look curiously at a beautiful woman?" For if you commit adultery in your heart, you will quickly dare to do it in the flesh also. Do not say, "What is it, if I pass by this poor man?" For if you pass by this one, you will also pass by the next one; if that one, also the other. Nor again, "What is it, if I covet what is my neighbor's?" For this, this caused Ahab to perish, though he paid a price, but 58.770 he took it from one unwilling. For one ought not to buy by compulsion, but by persuasion. But if he who paid the fitting price was so punished because he took it from one unwilling; he who does not even do this, and seizes from an unwilling person, and that while living under grace, of what punishment will he not be worthy? So that we may not be punished, therefore, keeping ourselves pure from all violence and plunder, and guarding against not only sins but also their beginnings, let us cultivate virtue with much diligence; for thus we shall also enjoy the eternal good things, by the grace and loving-kindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.
58.769 HOMILY 87. Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the Praetorium, and gathered the whole cohort against Him. And they stripped Him and put a scarlet robe on Him. And when they had twisted a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and a reed in His right hand. And they bowed the knee before Him and mocked Him,
saying to Him, "Hail, King of the Jews!"
