have I heard? And now we are washing a hand that is drawn up and withered; and for this reason, until we stretch it out completely, we will not cease. Would that you also discussed nothing else, both at home, and in the marketplace, and at table, and in the night, and in your dreams. For if we were always concerned with these things during the day, we would also be among them in our dreams. d. What do you say? Do I always speak about almsgiving? I myself wished that I had no great need for this counsel to you, but rather to speak about the battle against the Jews and the Greeks and the heretics; but how could one arm those who are not yet healthy? How could one lead them out to battle, while they still have wounds and scars? For if I saw that you were completely healthy, I would have led you out to that battle line, and you 58.780 would have seen, by the grace of Christ, ten thousand slain corpses, and their heads carried one after another. Indeed, in other books, many discourses have been spoken by us concerning these things; but not even so can we celebrate the victory purely, because of the negligence of the many. For whenever we defeat them ten thousand times in doctrine, they reproach us for the life of the many who gather with us, the wounds, the diseases of the soul. How then shall we confidently show you in the battle line, when you also bring scorn upon us, being immediately struck by the enemies and mocked? For one person's hand hurts, and is drawn up for giving. How then will such a person be able to hold a shield and put it forth, and not be wounded by the taunts of cruelty? For others, their feet are lame, as many as go up to the theaters, and the resorts of prostituted women. How then will these be able to stand in the battle, and not be struck down by the accusations of licentiousness? Another has sick eyes and is maimed, not seeing rightly, but full of licentiousness, and assaulting the chastity of women, and digging through marriages. How then will this man be able to look against the enemies, and shake a spear, and shoot an arrow, being pierced from all sides with taunts? It is possible to see also many suffering in their belly no less than those with dropsy, whenever they are possessed by gluttony and drunkenness. How then will I be able to lead these drunkards out to war? Another's mouth is rotten; for such are the quick-tempered and abusive and blasphemous. How then will this man ever raise a war-cry in battle, and do something great and noble, he too being drunk with another kind of drunkenness, and providing much laughter for the enemies? For this reason, each day I go around this army camp, healing these wounds, correcting these sores. But if you ever become sober, and become fit to strike others too, I will also teach you these tactics, and I will train you to handle these weapons; or rather, your deeds themselves will be weapons for you, and all will immediately submit, if you become merciful, if gentle, if meek and long-suffering, if you display all other virtue. But if any should speak against it, then we will also add what is from ourselves, bringing you into the midst; as for now we are even hindered, for your part, in this course. But consider. We say that Christ has done great things, making angels out of men; then, being called to account, and being ordered to provide the proof from this flock, we are silenced. For I fear, lest instead of angels, I bring out pigs as from a pigsty, and horses mad for females. I know that you are pained, but these things have not been said against all of you, but against those who are responsible; or rather not even against them, if they become sober, but for their sake. As for now, all is lost and corrupted; and the church is no different from a cattle-stall, and a pen for donkeys and camels; and I go about seeking a sheep, and I am not able to see one. Thus all are kicking, like horses and some wild donkeys, and they fill this place with much dung; for such are their conversations. And if it were possible to see the things said at each syn 58.781 axis by men, by women, you would have seen of that dung the...
