and while living He willingly suffered what He suffered, behold also a seal, and a stone, and a guard, and they were not strong enough to hold Him; but one thing only happens, that the burial might be made public, and from this the resurrection might be believed. For soldiers were sitting by, and Jews were watching. But late on the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to see the tomb. And behold, there was a great earthquake. For an angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door of the monument, and sat upon it. And his appearance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow. After the resurrection the angel came. For what reason then did he come, and remove the stone? For the sake of the women; for they then saw him in the tomb. So that they might believe that He was raised, they see the tomb empty of the body. For this reason he removed the stone, for this reason also the earthquake happened, that they might be aroused and awakened. For they had come to pour on oil, and these things happened at night, and it is likely that some had even fallen asleep. And for what reason and 58.784 why does he say, 'Do not be afraid, you'? First he frees them from fear, and then he speaks about the resurrection. And the 'you' is of one showing great honor, and indicating that the ultimate penalties await those who have dared what they dared, unless they repent. For it is not for you to be afraid, he says, but for those who crucified Him. Having therefore freed them from fear, both through his words and through his appearance, (for he showed a cheerful form, as one bearing such good news;) he added, saying, 'I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified.' And he is not ashamed to call Him 'the crucified'; for this is the sum of all good things. He is risen. How is this clear? As he said. So that even if you disbelieve me, he says, remember His words, and you will not disbelieve even me. Then also another proof. 'Come and see the place where he lay.' For this reason he raised the stone, so that from this they might also receive the proof. And tell the disciples that you will see him in Galilee. And he prepares them to bring good news to others, which most of all made them believe. And he said well, 'Into Galilee,' freeing them from troubles and dangers, so that fear might not disturb their faith. And they went out from the monument with fear and joy. Why so? They saw an amazing and paradoxical thing, an empty tomb, where they had first seen him placed. Therefore he also brought them to the sight, that they might become witnesses of both, of the tomb and of the resurrection. For they understood that no one would have taken him away, with so many soldiers sitting by, unless he had raised himself. For this reason they both rejoice and marvel, and for so great a perseverance they receive their reward, to be the first to see and to bring the good news, not only of the things spoken, but also of the things seen. 3. Since, then, they went out with fear and joy, Behold, Jesus met them, saying, 'Rejoice.' And they took hold of his feet, and running to him with exceeding gladness, they received both through touch a proof and full assurance of the resurrection, And they worshipped him. What then does He say? 'Do not be afraid.' Again He Himself casts out fear, preparing the way for faith. But go, and tell my brothers, that they should go into Galilee; and there they will see me. See how He Himself also through these women brings the good news to the disciples, which I have often said, bringing the gender that was most dishonored to honor and to good hopes, and healing that which had suffered. Perhaps one of you wished to have been like them, and to have held the feet of Jesus? You can, even now. as many of you as wish, not only to hold His feet and hands, but also that sacred head, partaking of the awesome mysteries with a pure conscience. Not only here, but also on that day you will see Him, coming with that ineffable glory and the host of angels, if you are willing to be philanthropic; and you will hear, not only these words, 'Rejoice,' but also those: 'Come, you blessed of the'

Εἶτα καὶ ἄλλη ἀπόδειξις. ∆εῦτε καὶ ἴδετε τὸν τόπον, ὄπου ἔκειτο. ∆ιὰ τοῦτο ἐπῆρε τὸν λίθον, ὥστε καὶ ἐντεῦθεν αὐτὰς λαβεῖν τὴν ἀπόδειξιν. Καὶ εἴπατε τοῖς μαθηταῖς, ὅτι ὄψεσθε αὐτὸν εἰς τὴν Γαλιλαίαν. Καὶ ἑτέροις εὐαγγελίζεσθαι παρασκευάζει, ὃ μάλιστα αὐτὰς ἐποίει πιστεῦσαι. Καὶ καλῶς εἶπεν, Εἰς τὴν Γαλιλαίαν, ἀπαλλάττων πραγμάτων καὶ κινδύνων, ὥστε μὴ τὸν φόβον διενοχλεῖν τῇ πίστει. Καὶ ἐξῆλθον ἐκ τοῦ μνημείου μετὰ φόβου καὶ χαρᾶς. Τί δήποτε; Ἔκπληκτον πρᾶγμα εἶδον καὶ παράδοξον, τάφον κενὸν, ἔνθα πρῶτον τεθέντα εἶδον. ∆ιὸ καὶ ἤγαγεν αὐτὰς εἰς θεωρίαν, ἵνα ἀμφοτέρων γένωνται μάρτυρες, καὶ τοῦ τάφου καὶ τῆς ἀναστάσεως. Καὶ γὰρ ἐνενόουν, ὅτι οὐδεὶς ἂν αὐτὸν ἦρε, στρατιωτῶν τοσούτων παρακαθημένων, εἰ μὴ ἑαυτὸν ἀνέστησε. ∆ιὰ τοῦτο καὶ χαίρουσι καὶ θαυμάζουσι, καὶ τῆς τοσαύτης παραμονῆς λαμβάνουσι τὴν ἀμοιβὴν, τὸ πρῶται ἰδεῖν καὶ εὐαγγελίσασθαι, οὐ τὰ εἰρημένα μόνον, ἀλλὰ καὶ τὰ ὁραθέντα. γʹ. Ἐπεὶ οὖν ἐξῆλθον μετὰ φόβου καὶ χαρᾶς, Ἰδοὺ Ἰησοῦς ἀπήντησεν αὐταῖς λέγων· Χαίρετε. Αἱ δὲ ἐκράτησαν τοὺς πόδας αὐτοῦ, καὶ μεθ' ὑπερβαλλούσης εὐφροσύνης αὐτῷ προσδραμοῦσαι, ἐλάμβανον καὶ διὰ τῆς ἁφῆς τεκμήριον καὶ πληροφορίαν τῆς ἀναστάσεως, Καὶ προσεκύνησαν αὐτῷ. Τί οὖν αὐτός; Μὴ φοβεῖσθε. Πάλιν καὶ αὐτὸς τὸ δέος ἐκβάλλει, προοδοποιῶν τῇ πίστει. Ἀλλ' ὑπάγετε, καὶ εἴπατε τοῖς ἀδελφοῖς μου, ἵνα ἀπέλθωσιν εἰς τὴν Γαλιλαίαν· κἀκεῖ με ὄψονται. Σκόπει πῶς καὶ αὐτὸς διὰ τούτων τοὺς μαθητὰς εὐαγγελίζεται, ὃ πολλάκις εἶπον, τὸ μάλιστα γένος ἀτιμωθὲν εἰς τιμὴν ἄγων καὶ εἰς χρηστὰς ἐλπίδας, καὶ τὸ πεπονηκὸς ἰώμενος. Τάχα τις ὑμῶν ἐβούλετο κατ' ἐκείνας γενέσθαι, καὶ τοὺς πόδας κατασχεῖν τοῦ Ἰησοῦ; ∆ύνασθε καὶ νῦν. ὅσοι βούλεσθε, οὐχὶ τοὺς πόδας καὶ τὰς χεῖρας μόνον, ἀλλὰ καὶ τὴν κεφαλὴν κατασχεῖν τὴν ἱερὰν ἐκείνην, τῶν φρικτῶν ἀπολαύοντες μυστηρίων καθαρῷ συνειδότι. Οὐκ ἐνταῦθα δὲ μόνον, ἀλλὰ καὶ ἐν ἐκείνῃ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ὄψεσθε αὐτὸν, μετὰ τῆς ἀποῤῥήτου δόξης ἐκείνης καὶ τοῦ δήμου τῶν ἀγγέλων ἐρχόμενον, εἰ βουληθείητε εἶναι φιλάνθρωποι· καὶ ἀκούσεσθε, οὐχὶ ταῦτα τὰ ῥήματα μόνον, ὅτι Χαίρετε; ἀλλὰ καὶ ἐκεῖνα· ∆εῦτε οἱ εὐλογημένοι τοῦ
