better to nourish hungry souls, than to pierce the lobes of your ears, and to hang the food of countless poor people from them rashly and in vain! For is being rich a cause for praise? Is wearing gold a commendation? Even if these things you wear were from just labors, even so what is being done is a very great accusation; but when it is also from injustice, consider the excess. But do you love praises and glory? Therefore take off this ridiculous attire, and then all will admire you, then you will enjoy both glory and pure pleasure; for as it is now you are full of jests, preparing for yourself many grounds for despondency from these things. For if any of these things should be lost, consider how many evils are born from this: how many maidservants are scourged, how many men are troubled, how many are led away, how many inhabit a prison. And from this, law-courts, and prosecutions, and countless curses and accusations from all sides, for the wife from her husband, for the husband from his friends, for the soul from itself. But it will not be lost. Indeed, this is not easy; but even if it should be kept safe forever, being kept safe again provides much anxiety and care and unpleasantness, and no profit. For what income is there from this for the house? what benefit for she who wears it? No benefit indeed, but much disorderliness, and accusation from all sides. How will you be able to kiss and hold the feet of Christ, being so adorned? He turns away from this adornment. For this reason he deigned to be born in the house of the carpenter, or rather not even in that house, but in a hut and a manger. How then will you be able to see him, not having a beauty desirable to him, not wearing an adornment lovely to him, but a hateful one? For the one approaching him must not be beautified with such garments, but be clothed with virtue. Consider what in the world this bit of gold is? Nothing other than earth and ash. Put water in it, and it has become mud. Consider and be ashamed of making mud your Master, and having left all things and sitting beside it, and carrying it and bearing it about everywhere, even when you enter the church, when most of all you ought to flee it. For the church has not been built for this reason, so that in it you may display this wealth, but so that you may display the spiritual wealth. But you, as if entering into a procession, so adorn yourself from all sides, imitating those on the stage, so with profusion you carry this ridiculous rubbish. For this very reason you become a cause of ruin for many, and when the church is dismissed, in homes, at tables, one might hear the majority recounting these things. For leaving off saying, "The prophet and the Apostle said this and that," they relate the costliness of the garments, the size of the stones, all the other indecency of those wearing these things. These things 58.787 make you idle towards mercy, and those who live with you. For none of you would readily choose to break up any of these gold items, and to feed a hungry person. For where you yourself would choose to be in want, rather than to see these things broken up, how could you nourish another from these things? For many women are disposed towards these things just as towards some living things, and no less than towards children. Away with it, she says. Show me this then, show it by your works, for as it is now I see the opposite. For who ever of those strongly captivated, having melted down these things, has snatched the soul of a child from death? And why do I say a child? Who has redeemed his own perishing soul with these things? On the contrary, indeed, many sell it for the sake of these things, every single day. And if a bodily illness occurs, they do everything; but if they see the soul corrupted, they do nothing of the sort, but are neglectful both of their descendants and of their own soul, so that these things may remain to be tarnished by time. And you indeed wear gold of countless talents; but the member of Christ does not even have the enjoyment of necessary food. But the common Master of all, both of heaven and of those in 58.788 the heavens, has given to all alike a share of the spiritual table; but you do not even give him a share of the things that perish, so that you may remain continuously bound by these harsh chains.
