the countless evils, from here comes the fornications of men, when you do not prepare them to be wise, but you teach them to take pleasure in these things with which prostituting women adorn themselves. For this reason they are also quickly captured. For if you had taught him to despise these things, and to take pleasure in modesty, piety, and humility, he would not easily be caught in the wings of fornication. For a prostitute can adorn herself in this way, and even more so; but in those other ways, she no longer can. Accustom him, therefore, to take pleasure in this adornment, which he cannot find lying with the prostitute. And how will you bring him into this habit? If you take this away, and put on that other. Thus your husband will be in safety, and you in honor, and God will be gracious to you, and all men will marvel, and you will obtain the good things to come, by the grace and loving-kindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.

58.787 HOMILY 90. Now when they were going, behold, some of the guard

came into the city, and told unto the chief priests all the things that were done. And when they were assembled with the elders, and had taken counsel, they gave large money

to the soldiers, Saying, Say ye, His disciples came by night, and stole him away while we slept. And if this should be heard by the governor, we

will persuade him, and make you secure. 1. For the sake of these soldiers that earthquake occurred, so as to astound them,

and that the testimony might come from them; which indeed also happened. For the report, being brought forth by the guards, was thus free from suspicion. For of the signs, some were shown to the whole world in common, others privately to those present there; in common to the world, the darkness; privately, that of the angel, that of the earthquake. Since, therefore, they came and reported it (for the truth shines forth when proclaimed by its adversaries), they again gave money, that they might say, he says, "That His disciples came and stole Him." How did they steal Him, O most foolish of all men? For because of the brightness and manifestness of the truth, they are not even able to fabricate a lie. For what was said was exceedingly improbable, and the falsehood did not even have a plausible appearance. For how did the disciples steal him, tell me, poor and common men, who did not even dare to appear? Was not a seal placed on it? Were not so many guards sitting by, both soldiers and Jews? Did they not suspect this very thing, and were they not anxious, and did they not keep watch, and take thought? And for what reason did they steal him? That they might invent the doctrine of the resurrection? And how could it have occurred to them to invent such a thing, men who were content to live in hiding? How could they have removed the stone that had been secured? How could they have escaped the notice of so many? And even if they despised death, they would not have attempted to dare something so rashly and in vain, when so many guards were present. That 58.788 they were also cowardly, the things that happened before showed. For when they saw Him taken, they all fled. If then at that time they did not dare even to stand when they saw Him alive, how would they not have feared the multitude of so many soldiers after He was dead? Was it like overturning a door? Was it like escaping the notice of one man? A great stone lay upon it, requiring many hands. Rightly did they say, "And the last error will be worse than the first"; declaring this against themselves, that when after such madness they ought to have repented, they instead strive against their former deeds, fabricating ridiculous fictions, and while He was alive, buying His blood, and after He was crucified and had risen, again undermining the account of the resurrection with money. But consider, I pray you, how they are convicted everywhere by what they do. For if they had not gone to Pilate, nor asked for the guard, they would have been better able to be shameless in such things; but now they can no longer. For as if eager to sew up their own mouths, so they did everything. For if
