and we find one number, one on the one hand because of the one appointed of all, and alone allotted to the bridegroom, and confessed by him with such a name, that "my dove is one," and again "my perfect one," since all the concubines are ignoble and not measured in innocence, nor in purity and gentleness. Therefore, those from the beginning joined to what is called Barbarism and Scythianism, up to the aforementioned Massalians, are 77 in number, and Hellenism, from which are the Greek heresies, and Judaism, from which are the Jewish ones, and Samaritanism, from which are the Samaritan ones; when these three are added to the number seventy-seven, they are completed to the number eighty and the one is left over, that is, the holy catholic church and Christianity, truly named from the beginning and with Adam and before Adam and before all ages with Christ, by the will of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, and believed in with all those who in every generation have pleased God, and clearly revealed in the world at his coming, and now, after all these heresies which are indeed called concubines by us, it is again praised, as according to the sequence of the argument. 7. For the Word himself in the Songs numbered thus, saying, "sixty queens," and "eighty concubines, and maidens without number. But one," he says, "is my dove, my perfect one; she is the one choice of her mother who bore her." And later he shows how she will be found among all, as more honored than all and ruling 3.503 over all and chosen for him alone, whose children are heirs of the king and true children, as "children of the promise" and not "children of the handmaid," nor of a concubine, nor of the others who are interpreted as numberless. For even if Abraham had children from Keturah the concubine, the children of Keturah are not co-heirs with Isaac; but they received gifts, for the sake of a legacy, so that the type might remain for the spiritual interpretation of the word, so as not to make some despair of the calling of Christ. For the gifts which he gave to Ishmael and to the sons of Keturah were a type of the good things to come for the conversion of the nations to the faith and the truth. For to Hagar, being a handmaid and cast out from Abraham as she who served the Jerusalem below with her children, concerning whom it is said, "I have rejected your mother," and again, "I have given a bill of divorce into her hands"—for to this handmaid, I mean Hagar, more symbolically for the hope of conversion he gives a skin of water, to show the power "of the washing of regeneration," given as a gift of life to the unbelievers and for the conversion of all the nations to the knowledge of the truth. But to the sons of Keturah the gifts were a possession of money, gold and silver and clothing, and things which in a mystery Abraham shut up in pouches, "frankincense and myrrh and gold," from the property of the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah, who were despoiled by Chedorlaomer and Birsha and the rest, who took the captives from Sodom and Gomorrah and the rest and plundered the cavalry and took captive the multitude of people and seized the possessions and money and the multitude of other things from each one; which he himself brought back "from the slaughter of the kings" at that time, and not daring to take back what had already been dedicated to the Lord God, but having given them as gifts along with the others to his sons from Keturah, as we find in the traditions of the Hebrews. 8. But at the coming of Christ, of the same children of Abraham from Keturah who had been cast out from Abraham and had gone away and settled in the Arabian parts of the land of Magodia, through the Magi who came from the succession of the
