unto death, even death on a cross,» the judgment was taken away; for so I understand the text: «In His humiliation His judgment was taken away»; so that what follows is, In His humiliation His judgment was taken away. But this man was led to 28.19.168 death for the iniquities of the people of God. Therefore this man died for the people, and 28.19.169 because of him the whole nation did not perish. And consider if you can take the name of the "7people"7 to refer to those of the circumcision, and that of the 28.19.170 "7nation"7 to refer to the rest. For this man died not only for the people, but also that the whole nation might not perish, as if it said the nation so called and all the gentiles might perish. 28.20.171 Next to this is the verse, «This he did not say on his own.» From which I think we learn that some things we men say on our own, with no power working in us to speak, but other things are said as if some power were suggesting and prompting them to us, even if we are not completely in ecstasy and unaware of ourselves, 28.20.172 but seem to follow what we are saying. And it is possible that while we are conscious of ourselves as we speak, we are not conscious of the meaning of what is said; just as now Caiaphas the high priest both did not speak on his own and did not receive the meaning of what he said as a prophecy being spoken. 28.20.173 And in Paul there are also some teachers of the law 28.20.174 «who understand neither what they are saying nor the things about which they make confident assertions.» But the wise man is not like this, concerning whom Solomon says in Proverbs: «A wise man will understand the things from his own mouth, and on his lips he will wear understanding.» 28.20.175 And it seems to me that circumstance also is sometimes a cause of prophesying, just as now for Caiaphas, his being high priest for that year in <which> Jesus was about to die for the people so that the whole nation might not perish; for although there were also other high priests, as is clear from what we have set forth before, no one prophesies except the high priest of the year in which Jesus was about to suffer. 28.20.176 And circumstance made Saul's messengers prophesy, who were sent to David, and Saul himself; for, as it were, their seeking David became the cause of prophecy, but of such a kind as has been recorded. 28.20.177 But also Balaam would not have taken up his parable and said, «From Mesopotamia he summoned me,» and what follows, had he not seen Israel encamped; and each time, seeing another part of the camp, from the newness of what was seen he was moved to speak concerning Israel. 28.21.178 Jesus, therefore, was about to die for the nation, which was different from the scattered children of God, as is clear from, «Jesus was about to die, not for the nation only, but also «that He might gather into one the children of God who are scattered abroad.» 28.21.179 And now it is time to inquire who are the scattered children of God apart from the nation. Concerning these, those who introduce natures will say that their "spiritual" people are the children of God, not having judged all things spiritually; for this follows for those who suppose that there are natures, and to think of the "spiritual" contrary to the will of the apostle, who teaches that «The spiritual man judges 28.21.180 all things, and he himself is judged by no one.» And it follows from this that he who does not judge all things is not spiritual, or is not yet spiritual. 28.21.181 But also if someone is judged by anyone, since the spiritual man is judged by no one, he is not spiritual, or is not yet spiritual. 28.21.182 Perhaps, then, it is better to say that one becomes spiritual, 28.21.183 not having been so before, who is already and properly a son of God. Who, then, are those now called children of God, if they are not the "7spiritual"7 according to those who introduce natures, it is time to consider. And see if you can understand the scattered children of God, other than the nation, to be those who were already, when these things were said, righteous in God, whether patriarchs who had fallen asleep, or prophets, or some other elect of God, or even those who were then strong; for as there are those who are strong and not
