Letter to the Monks

Letter to the Monks

OF OUR HOLY FATHER ATHANASIUS.

To the beloved and most desired brothers who practice the solitary life, and are established in the faith of God, greetings in the Lord.

26.1188 I give thanks to the Lord, who has given you to believe in him, so that with the saints you also might have eternal life; but since there are some who hold the views of Arius, who go about the monasteries, for no other reason than that, coming as if to you and returning as if from us, they may deceive the innocent; and there are some who, while affirming that they do not hold the views of Arius, yet condescend, and pray with them in the same place; of necessity, at the urging of some most sincere brothers, I have hastened to write to you, so that, by keeping pure and without deceit the devout faith, which the grace of God works in you, you may not give an occasion of scandal to the brothers. For when some people see you, the faithful in Christ, coming together and communicating with them, they will certainly suppose that such a thing is of no consequence, and they will fall into the mire of impiety. So that this may not happen, be willing, beloved, to turn away from those who openly hold impious views, and to beware of those who think they do not hold the views of Arius, but communicate with the impious; and especially from those whose mindset we turn away, it is fitting to flee from their company. And if anyone pretends to confess the right faith, but is seen communicating with them, exhort such a one to abstain from such a habit; and if he promises, have such a one as a brother; but if he contentiously persists, shun such a one. For by so doing you will keep the faith pure; and they, seeing you, will be helped, fearing lest they be thought to be impious and to hold their views.

Epistula ad monachos
