Letter to the monks

Letter to the monks

OF OUR HOLY FATHER ATHANASIUS.

To the brothers practicing the solitary life, and established in the faith of God, beloved and most longed-for, greetings in the Lord.

26.1188 I thank the Lord, who gave you to believe in him, so that with the saints you also may have eternal life; but since there are some who hold the opinions of Arius, who go about the monasteries, for no other reason than this: that as if coming to you and returning from us, they might deceive the innocent. And there are others who, while affirming they do not hold the opinions of Arius, condescend and pray with them in the same place. Of necessity, at the exhortation of some most sincere brothers, I have hastened to write to you, so that, by keeping pure and guileless the pious faith which the grace of God works in you, you may not give an occasion of scandal to the brothers. For when some people see you, the faithful in Christ, gathering and communing with them, they will surely suppose such a thing to be a matter of indifference and will fall into the mire of impiety. Therefore, so that this does not happen, be willing, beloved, to turn away from those who openly hold the opinions of impiety, and to be on your guard against those who think they do not hold the opinions of Arius, yet commune with the impious; and especially those whose way of thinking we reject, it is fitting to flee from their communion. But if anyone pretends to confess the right faith, but is seen communing with those others, urge such a person to abstain from such a habit. And if he promises, have such a person as a brother; but if he persists contentiously, shun such a person. For by conducting yourselves in this way you will keep the faith pure; and those others, seeing you, will be edified, fearing lest they be thought to be impious and to hold their opinions.

Epistula ad monachos
