Testimonies from Scripture, of the fellowship according to nature, from the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit being in like manner for a contemplation difficult to attain, and having one operation.

Concerning freedom.

Concerning the Father, it is indubitable. Concerning the Son, the voice of the Son himself: «Unless the Son sets you free, you are slaves.» Concerning the Spirit, through Paul it thus 28.32 says: «When one turns to the Lord, the veil is removed. Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.» Concerning giving life. The Savior says: «As the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whom he will;» and concerning the Spirit he says: «It is the Spirit that gives life, the flesh profits nothing.» And the Apostle: «The letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.» Concerning ordination. Concerning the Father, Paul says: «God has appointed in the Church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers;» and the rest. Concerning the Son, the same Apostle affirms: «He who descended is he who also ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things. And he gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as shepherds and teachers.» Concerning the Spirit, the same one summons the elders from Miletus, and says to them: «Take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the Church of God.» Concerning lawgiving. Μαρτυρίαι ἐκ τῆς Γραφῆς, τῆς κατὰ φύσιν κοινωνίας, ἐκ τοῦ ὁμοίως εἶναι τὸν Πατέρα, καὶ τὸν Υἱὸν, καὶ τὸ ἅγιον Πνεῦμα πρὸς θεωρίαν δυσέφικτον, καὶ μίαν ἔχειν ἐνέργειαν.

Περὶ ἐλευθερίας.

Περὶ Πατρὸς ἀναμφίβολον. Περὶ Υἱοῦ, φωνὴ αὐτοῦ τοῦ Υἱοῦ· «Ἐὰν μὴ ὁ Υἱὸς ὑμᾶς ἐλευθερώσῃ, δοῦλοί ἐστε.» Περὶ τοῦ Πνεύματος διὰ Παύλου οὕτως 28.32 λέγει· «Ὅταν ἐπιστρέψῃ πρὸς Κύριον, περιαιρεῖ ται τὸ κάλυμμα. Ὁ δὲ Κύριος τὸ Πνεῦμά ἐστιν· οὗ δὲ τὸ Πνεῦμα Κυρίου, ἐκεῖ ἐλευθερία.» Περὶ ζωοποιήσεως. Λέγει ὁ Σωτήρ· «Ὥσπερ ὁ Πατὴρ ἐγείρει τοὺς νε κροὺς καὶ ζωοποιεῖ, οὕτως καὶ ὁ Υἱὸς οὓς θέλει, ζωο ποιεῖ·» καὶ περὶ τοῦ Πνεύματός φησι· «Τὸ Πνεῦμά ἐστι τὸ ζωοποιοῦν, ἡ σὰρξ οὐκ ὠφελεῖ οὐδέν.» Καὶ ὁ Ἀπόστολος· «Τὸ γράμμα ἀποκτείνει, τὸ δὲ Πνεῦμα ζωοποιεῖ.» Περὶ χειροτονίας. Περὶ Πατρὸς Παῦλος λέγει· «Ἔθετο ὁ Θεὸς ἐν τῇ Ἐκκλησίᾳ πρῶτον ἀποστόλους, δεύτερον προφήτας, τρίτον διδασκάλους·» καὶ τὰ ἑξῆς. Περὶ Υἱοῦ ὁ αὐτὸς Ἀπόστολος φάσκει· «Ὁ καταβὰς, αὐτός ἐστι καὶ ὁ ἀναβὰς ὑπὲρ ἄνω τῶν οὐρανῶν, ἵνα πληρώσῃ τὰ πάντα. Καὶ αὐτὸς ἔδωκε τοὺς μὲν ἀποστόλους, τοὺς δὲ προφήτας, τοὺς δὲ ποιμένας καὶ διδασκάλους.» Περὶ Πνεύματος ὁ αὐτὸς μετακαλεῖται ἀπὸ τῆς Μιλήτου τοὺς πρεσβυτέρους, καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς· «Προσέχετε ἑαυ τοῖς, καὶ παντὶ τῷ ποιμενίῳ, ἐν ᾧ ὑμᾶς ἔθετο τὸ Πνεῦμα τὸ ἅγιον ἐπισκόπους, ποιμαίνειν τὴν Ἐκκλησίαν τοῦ Θεοῦ.» Περὶ νομοθεσίας. Περὶ Πατρὸς ὁ ∆αυῒδ λέγει· «Τοῦ ποιῆσαι τὸ θέ λημά σου, ὁ Θεός μου, ἐβουλήθην, καὶ τὸν νόμον σου ἐν μέσῳ τῆς κοιλίας μου.» Περὶ Υἱοῦ ὁ Παῦλος· «Ἀλλήλων τὰ βάρη βαστάζετε, καὶ οὕτως ἀναπληρώσατε τὸν νόμον τοῦ Χριστοῦ.» Περὶ Πνεύματος ὁ αὐτός· «Ὁ νόμος τοῦ Πνεύματος τῆς ζωῆς ἐν Χρι στῷ Ἰησοῦ ἠλευθέρωσέ με.» Περὶ κυριότητος. Ὁ ∆αυῒδ λέγει· «Εἶπεν ὁ Κύριος τῷ Κυρίῳ μου· Κάθου ἐκ δεξιῶν μου.» Εἰ δὲ ἀντιλέγουσιν οἱ αἱρετι κοὶ λέγοντες, ὅτι εἰς τὸν ∆αυῒδ ἐκλαμβάνεται τοῦτο, ἐλέγχει αὐτοὺς τὸ παρὰ τοῦ Σωτῆρος λεγόμενον· «Τί λέγετε περὶ τοῦ Χριστοῦ; τίνος ἐστὶν υἱός; λέγουσι· Τοῦ ∆αυῒδ.» Ἀποκρίνεται ὁ Σωτήρ· «Πῶς οὖν ∆αυῒδ ἐν Πνεύματι ἁγίῳ Κύριον αὐτὸν καλεῖ;» πάλιν περὶ τοῦ Πατρός· «Ἄκουε, Ἰσραὴλ, Κύριος ὁ Θεός σου, Κύριος εἷς ἐστι.» Περὶ δὲ τοῦ Υἱοῦ, λέγει· «Ὁ δὲ Κύριος ἐκ Σιὼν ἀνακράζεται, καὶ ἐξ οὐρανοῦ δώσει τὴν φωνὴν αὐτοῦ, καὶ σεισθήσεται ὁ οὐρανὸς καὶ ἡ γῆ. Ὁ δὲ Κύριος φείσεται τοῦ λαοῦ αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἐνισχύσει Κύριος τοὺς υἱοὺς Ἰσραήλ. Καὶ ἐπιγνώσε σθε, ὅτι ἐγώ εἰμι Κύριος ὁ Θεὸς ὑμῶν, ὁ κατασκηνώσας ἐν Σιὼν, ἐν ὄρει ἁγίῳ.» Ὁ δὲ κατασκηνώσας, ἤτοι ὁ Υἱὸς, λέγει· «Ἐγὼ δὲ κατεστάθην βασιλεὺς 28.33 ὑπ' αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ Σιὼν ὄρος τὸ ἅγιον αὐτοῦ,» καὶ τὰ ἑξῆς. Περὶ δὲ τοῦ Πνεύματος εἰπὼν, ὅτι «Εἶπεν ὁ Κύριος τῷ Κυρίῳ μου,» ὑποκαταβὰς λέγει· Καὶ Κύριος ἐκ δεξιῶν σου·» τοῦ οὖν Υἱοῦ πάλιν ἐκ δεξιῶν τὸ Πνεῦμα. Ὅτι ὁ Πατὴρ Κύριον τὸν Υἱὸν καλεῖ, καὶ ὁ Ἀπόστολος τὸ Πνεῦμα καὶ Κύριον καὶ Θεὸν λέγει, ὡς καὶ τὸν Υἱόν. Λέγει γὰρ οὕτως· «Καὶ ἔσται μετὰ ταῦτα· Ἐκχεῶ ἀπὸ τοῦ Πνεύματός μου ἐπὶ πᾶσαν σάρκα, καὶ προφη τεύσουσιν οἱ υἱοὶ ὑμῶν, καὶ αἱ θυγατέρες ὑμῶν, καὶ οἱ πρεσβύτεροι ὑμῶν ἐνύπνια ἐνυπνιασθήσονται, καὶ οἱ νεανίσκοι ὑμῶν ὁράσεις ὄψονται.
