Epistle I to the Corinthians
Of the holy Clement, bishop of Rome
Epistle to the Corinthians I. Written on behalf of the Church of the Romans.
CHAPTER I. The church of God which sojourns at Rome to the church of God sojourning at Corinth, to those who are called and sanctified by the will of God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Grace to you and peace from God Almighty through Jesus Christ be multiplied. Because of the sudden and repeated misfortunes and calamities that have happened to us, we think that we have been somewhat slow in turning our attention to the matters in dispute among you, beloved, and to the detestable and unholy sedition, so alien and strange to the elect of God, which a few rash and self-willed persons have kindled to such a pitch of madness that your venerable and celebrated name, worthy to be loved by all men, has been greatly blasphemed. For who that has sojourned among you has not proved your all-virtuous and steadfast faith? has not admired your sober and gentle piety in Christ? and has not proclaimed your magnificent practice of hospitality? and has not blessed your perfect and secure knowledge? For you did all things without respect of persons, and walked in the ordinances of God, being subject to your rulers, and rendering to the presbyters among you the honor which is their due. You enjoined the young to think sober and reverent thoughts; you charged the women to perform all their duties with a blameless and reverent and pure conscience, loving their own husbands as is right; and you taught them, while keeping in the rule of subjection, to manage the affairs of their household with reverence, being altogether discreet. CHAPTER II. You were all humble-minded, boasting of nothing, being submissive rather than submitting others, more gladly giving than receiving. Being content with the provisions of Christ and paying attention to His words, you stored them carefully in your hearts, and His sufferings were before your eyes. Thus a profound and rich peace was given to all, and an insatiable desire for doing good, and a full outpouring of the Holy Spirit was upon all;
