Catechesis ad illuminandos 2 (recensio e cod. Paris. 409) ̓ 1 Sin is a terrible thing and a most grievous disease of the soul ... its sinews, but of fire .. self-deter.. a shoot of choice, and that indeed (υτ πριορ ἔκδοσις) .. om. clearly ... the fruit is bad, for evil is from choice, the planter is blameless. Therefore the vin.. bore fruit from choice .. man in uprightness .. for good works, as the apostle says. As a good creator .. but that which was well created .. they always served the one who possesses; for suppose for me .. until .. he put away the coal and with it put away the burning ... so also sin t.. n.. t.. s.. cutting under .. and covers over .. 2 But perhaps someone will say ... what then is .. evil growing of its own choice .. is in you .. of judgment, O man .. not envy .. 3 Not only .. and will not look at you .. it unbinds .. brings you into a mire of evils .. but you say .. one root .. before it blossoms, take away the evil, will you not ...? .. when your eye begins to hurt, treat it in good time, so that you are not blinded and then seek the physician. 4 The author of sin, the d.. begetter .. Jesus Christ has said .. constructed from his own choice .. having taken also the .. for being a princ.. .. for satan is called the adversary .. these are not stories, but what we have learned .. taking up a lament .. in your days, from the day you were created, until .. in you. Very well 'was found in you,' for evil is not from without (cf. priorem textum) .. but he himself begot the evil; for this reason it has been said: Your heart was lifted up because of your beauty, and .. you. And this in agreement the Lord .. this one casts in .. to those who obey him .. every form of wickedness .. 5 What then? Are we lost .. sin is terrible .. is it not possible to walk upright? So then, to speak briefly: we have died, and n.. e.. a... having raised Lazarus on the four.., O man, who was stinking, can He not more easily raise you who are living (fere ut I.) .. having poured out, is He not able to rescue you .. let us not cast ourselves into a hopeless state (cf.).. For it is a terrible thing not to believe in repentance, for he who does not pr.. t.. s.. unsparingly adds evils to repentance .. For a robber not expecting punishment increases despair .. was changed .. teach.. we will not bear fruit .. 6 He is not a little philanthropic; do not say ... many terrible things for me .. will he forgive? will he grant amnesty? .. sins the medical experience of the master; knowing these things, O man, give yourself over with faith, say .. against me my lawlessness m.. t.. c.. and the next thing said will likewise happen to you (cod.. ῷ ε . εἰρημένῳ) and you have forgiven. 7 A voce φιλανθρωπίαν semel scripta, ad eam- dem iterum positam fit transitus, omissis 5 ver- sibus, caetera editis auctiora ad primam Adam the first man disobeyed God; but could He not immediately bring death upon him? For he heard 'do not eat'; and 'do not eat' is a principle of fasting and self-control. But see what the philanthropic One does: He casts him out of paradise (for he was unworthy of that life because of sin) but settles him opposite paradise, so that seeing from where he fell and from what delight and from what things to what things he was brought down, he might then be saved by repentance, and be redeemed (sic) from the bitter taste. Cain the firstborn man became a fratricide, an inventor of evils, a beginner of murder, envious, a craftsman of all wickedness, for he himself also became the cause of the wickedness. For he envied the good, and killed his brother, and having killed him, is condemned. For God said to him: 'You shall be groaning and trembling u.. t.. e..' Great is the sin, but small is the condemnation. 8 This is truly then also a philanthropy of God (rursus respicit priorem scripturam), but these things are still small compared to what will be said. For consider for me ... and much lawlessness; then the earth was flooded, and because of this a deluge was about to come; and in the 500th year God brought the threat, but in the 600th He brings it on .. being extended. For was it that which ... after the century, and immediately .. giving time for repentance .. the people of that time .. of philanthropy, if they had fasted, they would not have suffered such things. 9 Perhaps also to
